You guys are too harsh! It is actually more reliable than an A series as its built like a boat anchor and then some. Depends what you want Im getting a softer spot for the older Nissan motors they are underrated. A15 will make more power but turbo would come close.

I drove a 411 with a j15 with twin carbs from an MG and was smooth and although not fast was nicer than the engine it copies the twin carbed MG 4 cyl. They are heavy, old but bullet proof and sound very sweet if you like to cruise they are clean and simple.

Otherwise try for an R16 which was also available in the 411 SSS and fits a fairlady 5 speed and lsd h190, with 5 mains or H20 from u20, A melbourne tuner Lou mondello recently got 118kws and 180lbs of torque atw from one and bolts up to J box using R or H bellhousing. You cant beat a H20 2 liter for cost, reliability and torque. They are the strongest 4 cylinder every made by Nissan and the famous U20 is based on this beast. Stock 99hp and should fit as its the same length as the R16 but taller due to longer stroke but still heaps of room in 411 bay height.

They r heavy but bearings and rods like a diesel engine used all over the world for big forkies with all parts still available new everywhere even cheaper and better replacements parts than for the L series. New heads, cams, cranks you name it.
