Sure it was a factory special. Nissan Motor Distributors Ltd (NZ) shipped engines to Papakura, and modified engines are then sent back to Nissan Motors Distributors where they were mated to new 1200s on the assembly line.

SSS featured Twin Carbies, racing cam, coby extractors, gauges, steering wheel, Ward alloys, SSS badges, stripes and bucket seats were added. It was more than a trim package and proved how good the round-port engine could be (more HP than the GX oval-port engine). The SSS option cost $543 NZD in 1972, making it quite the expensive little car.
