the stock design is bad - for anything other than standard road use (genuine or not)
definitely upgrade - busted heaps of the stock ones
definitely don't go solid
check out the land rover engine mounts on ebay - forget the name of the exact ones (perhaps series 1 range rover), but there is a set that are just a round mount around 75mm diameter at a guess. i cut some off the base metal plate to clear the folded lip on the datsun crossmember. but i've been running one set on the rally car for years without breaking now
