Thanks for the info. My intent is not to reverse engine rotation as I believe that would create many new issues. Some and I believe most engines have the crank offset slightly from true vertical of the cylinder so the downward push on the piston during the power stroke is more straight. Reversing the rotation the power stroke would be on the other side at a greater angle and more stress on the pistons and rods. Then there would be cam timing and timing chain issues as you said.

I have used a 2 gpm hydraulic pump on the front end of a 1972 1200cc engine through a love joy coupling for over 15 years at pressures of 2200 psi, to raise the boom on my windmill boom truck with no problems. You might calculate HP needed for that. Doesn't seem to load the engine much at all.
