You've been told both ways because there are two different rev counters: 1) original 1970-1973 tachometer interrupts the IGN circuit 2) late-model 1200 tachometer does not
If you have an original tachometer, it fits an original 1200 wiring harness without cutting the harness
Late-model tachometer (no wiring loop) connects to coil- terminal
