what about the GM Buick V6 mototrs. Holden used them here in AUS from 1989-2005ish. 3.8l V6, very compact and can make crazy horsepower.
There is a guy here in Perth that drags a 120Y with a GM V6. You can buy a good 2nd had unit here in Perth for about $250 and there is heaps of them.
Not sure what GM used them for in the US, if at all, but that would be my bet if i was keen on that idea.
The Buick/ecotec V6 units use a counter balance cam shaft to balance out the harmonics as it has an odd fire order. On a side note the 3.8l V6 motors make a wild sound when setup with a separate twin exhaust system!
I think its known as the L27 GM V6 in your neck of the woods
