I remember this very well. She called me to
"tune up" the B310 coupe, and on the test drive I noticed it pinged randomly. Sometimes a torrent of ratting sometimes nothing.
After removing the distributor cap I was presented with this sight:
I have no idea why it was so rusty
Turned out the distributor weight springs had rusted in two, resulting in the shaft moving back and forth and 30 degrees with nothing to oppose it
Easy enough to fix. The pickup wires also snapped off -- as seen in first photo -- and one of the terminals on the module also snapped off. Good thing I carried a spare D4K in my car -- the only time I ever needed to use it. Got that B310 running perfect in short order
