Those can be used to correct the angle when the leaves are raised unevely. For example by using really long shackles
If you use lowering blocks or reset springs it won't require a wedge
If you raise the vehicle 5" then the railshaft angle might exceed the u-joint design. In which case if might be better to angle the pinion up -- causing a little vibration -- rather than total failure of the joint
