Electric Fuel Pump need not be by the tank. I ran different electric pumps in my Datsuns and all were in the engine compartment. I believe people say that for fuel injected cars, but a carburetor needs a low-pressure pump (2.6 psi stock, 3.0 psi A14, even Weber says not to go over 3.0 psi)
first used the square Facet/Beck-Arnley style mounted on the firewall, worked great with my stock A12
my last 1200 with twin-carb A14 used the Nissan electric pump, mounted below the battery
The electric works OK, but are kinda noisty
On the other hand my 40-year old mechanical pump was still working on my A12 sedan. The only problem it ever had was getting the internal mesh filters clogged from bad fuel resulting in low pressure. Removed the top, washed it out and it was good to go for more years
