Wonder no longer. The reason is because Datsun wanted to sell some low-price Stanza and Sunny, so a simple bumper it was. In 1978 plain chrome was considered old-fashioned so they sold a lot of "upscale" version with rubber capped bumpers, especially in affluent places like Europe and Japan. The main difference between early B310 and late B310 bumpers was that they added more and more rubber
Now we recognize the timeless classic that chrome bumpers are
Japan used the all-chrome bumper on early (round headlight) and late (square headlight) B310. And all Van wagons had them
H85 all-metal bumper - used on Sedan CT, Sedan City DX, Sedan DX
Used on Coupe DX, Coupe ES, and Coupe Sport
Of course GX models -- like the SGX of this discussion -- couldn't use such plain bumpers. They had to be fancied up
