there were better made flatties by other makes especially with more main bearings and better cooling solutions. There are easily 2 dozen Flatties that came before and after that were better than Fords leading mass produced items.
Today newly cast ford flathead blocks have all its issues solved are are making over 400hp
Packard and Chrysler 6 - 8 had around 5 litres and straight from factory made 270-300lbs of torque at a lazy 1600 rpm just like diesel engines but with 6:1 to 8:1 compression ratio.
Direct injection of today with twin sparkplugs and serious ignition could bring compression up to 11:1 and even more with swirl designs as used by Jaguar v12 and Mazda Skyactive principles or boost.
Better heat proof coatings, electric water pumps and M/Benz styled pre chambers on the runners leading to the sidevalve would be easily implemented and theoretically take such a platform to 40+% efficiency
However its reliability would be too good for the short life cycles and servicing manufacturers prefer to make after sales profits.
