Where you live, is it separate title (for ownership) and road registration every year? In USA these are two different things

Much like the US, things differ state to state. Aus wide you pay CTP (Compulsory Third Party insurance) when you pay for your registration renewal. They also lump in Road Tax and all that crap which doesn't seem to go anywhere because our roads are still cactus

In Queensland you need a Roadworthy only when initially registering an unregistered vehicle, transferring the registration into another persons name, or transferring an interstate vehicle to QLD registration.

I think (don't quote me, I only lived in NSW until I was 12yo), in NSW they have Blue Slips to initially register and/or transfer ownership of the vehicle, and a yearly Pink Slip (roadworthy) if the vehicle is over 5 years old

This is why there are a few absolute bombs driving around QLD as you only need to get a roadworthy once in the cars life under you ownership if you keep paying the registration. Technically speaking, if the previous owner kept the registration going on the 1200 Sedan, he could have been driving it today under the same roadworthy it got back in 2000

Other states, who knows, I can only google so much while I am at work
Every state has yearly registration as a maximum term
