Mmmmmm.. Jaimie got a point there, what would the chances be of finding a complete (tubbed, 4 link susp, cage) 1200 ute body for sale in Western Aus, that I can slap my motor and electronics into. Do they appear from time to time?
Other wise: what if I import it piece for piece - you know a brand new body shell only costs ZAR19000 from NISSAN SA, and it comes with no body tags if I,m not mistaken. Thats AUS $3275 for a 2007 model ute body!!!!

Picko
Thanks for info thus far, got hold of customs yesterday and they sed 10% imp duty on value & 10% GST - don't think that they understand the concept of a non road going non street registered drag car though because all the info they gave me was exactly as it is on their website for a road vehicle. And how on earth are they going to value it ? - bought in 1990 for 33000 SA Rand, then converted to 2 litre motor then added contless go-faster-goodies, then depereciated it over 7 years to date - not going to be happy if some car dealer / evaluator values it at 100 000 SA RAnd

Nah, won't even be trying to get her street registered, not worth the effort/begging/pleading etc.
It runs an 11 sec flat quarter on an unprepared surface, been an ongoing project for 5 years now, spent too much on it to sell. Fully modded vehicles here go for very little money.

yes GX1200, I own 2 - one for work, a 1990 model, pretty damn standard; and another for drag racing with a 2L Mazda motor in it, barely street legal here, cops in Perth would probably die laughing if they pulled me over in it. Was thinking of bringing both, but the cat converter thing seems to be the bastard for the road registered one, so i guess I'll have to leave her behind...sobsob
UNLESS the "commercial vehicle classification" applies as Picko mentioned

Can any of you Aussies tell me when the use of a catalytic converter on vehicles became law in Australia. Is there a cut-off date for vehicles manufactured before a certain date? Planning on importing a 1990 A14 Nissan bakkie to Perth at year end when we move. And what are the regs regarding import of a drag race only vehicle into Aus, any of u guys done it before?
thanks/cheers

You can check my 6 years running work in progress bakkie out if you go to search and type "bones" and "ute".
If anyone needs info on how to get 300 wheel kw out of a mazda 2L 16v, just shout.

Hi fellas

The bakkie we have here in S Africa is the same body panel wise except for the roof which has a slightly higher profile (after 1982) All models we got here before 82 are exactly same as the aussie version (round lights plus flat roof). The long wheel base versions never ever reached african shores. Body panels (from nissan dealers and aftermarket ones) are still dirt cheap here - which is strange cause every other vehicle part is a complete rip-off. I asked a question on the forum a while back about importing parts for utes to Perth where I have some business connections - but I got no reply from anyone. Is it viable and how much demand in Aus is there for the panels?

Ja kulula

Lamco cam is what that bliksemsevinnig DUNRITE yellow gx is running (the one from Natal with the unbelievable-to-some quartermile times)
Played with my work bakkies' engine the other day - put an electric radiator fan, pertronix ignitor electronic ign plus 40kv coil, and a branch and gazorst 50mm. Unbelievable what little mods u have to do to get power out of these things! Came second in a local gymkhana after that!Decided not to put the cam/flywheel as it may make it heavier on juice, thus it is for sale - along with a nitrous system, a whole A14 engine that needs some work, lots of bits & pieces for 2L 16v mazda turbo motor, jamex front springs
Let us know how the 4AGZE conversion goes - my mate just put one in a beach buggy and it ran a 12 sec flat in PE the other day - cheers

A10, all the south african ones come out with KM/h gauges and a rev counter next to it. If you have a contact travelling thru SA, I can organize as many as you want, this place is rotten with Dato Ute parts - diffs, 5 spd boxes, interiors etc, all original off of new 1400 bakkies which are still been produced. I run 2 of them for my business and another for drags/fun. Oh, and Nissan SA is a direct subsidiary of Nissan Japan, so the utes are all genuine Nissans, not some Mahindra/Kia copy type thing. cheers
