Interesting conversation. Good to see some enthusiasm for the upcoming election. I urge everyone to take their voice to the polling station. Maybe the Labour party will be led by Gillard from tomorrow afternoon. In anycase it'll be a day for the history books.

Jordan, not sure what you mean by CFR I will be intersted by what you mean.

All the best

I'm as dissapointed with Rudd as anyone but the idea of Abbott running the country is abhorrent. I admit Labour were ahead of Liberal on my preferences but they were both after many others. The greens are far too totalitarian for anyone's good and will need to moderate if they hope to achive anywhere near as much as the Democrat's did don't forget the GST was a liberal policy, Howard was very successful at taking credit where it suited and blaming other's where it suited.

Howard was not responsible for good economic times, Rudd is not responsible for bad times, the Australian economy is very much at the whim of China and vicariously Europe and America, we are puny in comparison.

Some interesting comments you make, I maybe agree with half of them. It's intersting to me what people think so I can figure out weather to immigrate to where Abbott is not prime minister.

Just out of interest, why is a synchronous or toothed belt drive called a gilmer drive when it's put on the front of an engine?

You can find all the parts to make one up pretty easy, in QLD there's small parts, in Melbourne there's pies automation and probably many others. The guys at pies are friendly.

Hello,

I'm thinking about building a custom inlet manifold for the A15 in my coupe and I'm wondering what dimensions others have worked to. For a maniflod that comes straight out from the head I would guess at having about 200mm before it hits the strut tower and a little more if it curves up. From what you've all done;

-How much clearance is needed between the manifold and strut tower for engine movement? (~30mm?)

-How long are the twin weber/ lynx combinations and how much space do they leave between the aircleaner and strut tower?

-Those with quad motorbike carbs/ throttle bodies, how far out did your set up sit?

Any help would be appreciated, I'm still thinking/ planning and slow with projects so I wouldn't expect any results too quickly.

Thanks

Sounds like a chainsaw carb. Now to answer your question, I don't know but I can guess;

1) Fixed jets never change their flow and so are less likely to need resetting ever

2) I would imagine when manufacturing cars for a particular location all the cars would get the same carb jets then a quick run on the rollers to make sure the mix is within spec. Having to tune every single one would be much more expensive.

There are probably more reasons however there's no reason why you couldn't make your own adjustable jets and fit them to a carb. If your design can reliably lock the jet position you might have a nice after market product.

Just my thoughts

I've thought about this myself.

Solar Panels:
Unless the car spends alot more time parked in the sun than actually driving it's probably not worth it. The tray area may be worth about 100W at the most in strong direct sun and cost a bundle. They'd be better on the roof of your house. The solar cars have state of the art panels and an extremely low drag coefficient and area using only on order of 100W to drive at speed. The main problem is solar energy is diffuse (i.e. spread out).

It would cost alot but if you drove the car everyday it would probably pay for its self in say 5-10 years and would be pretty unique. There's a number of places that do kits in the US, a place in Victoria that does conversions (Castlemain I think) and loads of webpages. Here's a couple

http://www.strathsteam.com/page10.html
http://www.aeva.asn.au/

I'd be impressed if you could do a conversion with good to high performance for less than around $10k. Depends what you want to use it for, for big power you need big batteries to supply the current, e.g. for a 144V system (a common dc system) you need 280 odd amps to make 40kW.

Another interesting prospect is salvaging electric motors from hybrid cars, I think Adelaide Uni had a student project along these lines, autospeed also have an article on it.

Best of luck, it's an interesting topic.

To my surprise my haynes manual for the bucket (CB lancer) shows pictures of a 4g15 MPI engine with the same manifold. Curious that the port spacing is different on my Carby 4g15. I'd upload if I had a scanner. Perhaps it is the 8v version of the engine that this manifold is from?

Have you tried to go faster to see if it stops? Wheels are usually worse at ~50-60km/hr depending on their size (interestingly this corresponds with road corregations). I had a tail shaft on an old holden start vibrating once and that was very specifically around 95kms/hr.

If it just gets worse with speed and doesn't get better then you've got a large out of balance force, i.e. perhaps a damaged gear or an out of round drum brake or something. I've had worn suspension components and never noticed vibration but where I lived then the roads were pretty rough (and still are).

[Edit: another point if it is speed related you can try the same speed and a different gear (if safe) to see what half of the drive line it is.]
