1200RallyCar,

I have updated my profile, I am in Adelaide. I have checked everywhere, even obscure country town wreckers in the middle of no where, but these Sunny 5 speed gearboxes don't exist, it seems like the Holy Grail of the Dato world!!! I think you would need to be at the right wrecker at the right time to score one.

From what I have read there would seem to thousands of these in the US. If they only cost approx $100 and say another $500 to get it shipped down here then why not source these from the US?????? Has anybody else tried this??? It can't be that hard.

Hound,

I am doing an A15 conversion on my 1971 Ute. It is not expensive but there are other costs like brakes. You can put what you like in it but you have to be able to stop it. The early model utes such as yours have drum brakes all round as standard. You will probably need a front end strut conversion with disk brakes (Stanza is popular), to make it all legal. You are probably looking at another $1000 to do it properly.

Guys,

My 1200 ute is under going an upgrade to a A15 with a mild street cam, Twin Su's and extractors. Basically a standard upgrade that will give me mild street performance. I hadn't thought about a 5 speed gear box until I read below.

1) Do I need one . What difference does it make??

2) What model do the 5 speed gear boxes come out of. Are they hard to find, what are the $'s involved.

cheers,

Daz

Cable Tie,

Photos when you have finished would be great. Details on all of the mods and what you did would be useful.

cheers,

Does anyone out there know what other type of datsun fuel tanks will fit under a 1200 ute without a huge amount of mods?? The current tank I think is only 30 litres but I want something a little bigger for the longer trips.

Guys,

After re-reading this discussion I am still a little in the dark here. Am having trouble with distingishing betwen the diff centre and diff housing / axle combinations bewteen the H145 and H165.

To upgrade the 1971 dato ute H145 diff set up, I grab a H165 diff centre and housing / axle assembly out of a series 1 or 2 bluebird or a later model ute and the whole thing bolts straight in with no mods with the current rear drum brake set up. Yes or no???

Have not heard about Lancer radiators, you would seriously need to check where the inlet and outlets are and what type of hoses to use. Apparently in the Gemini the inlet and outlet are roughly in the same position as the 1200 which is what makes it suitable.

I am about to plonk an A15 into my 1200 Ute. What is the best radiator upgrade to install with this?? I have heard that a 120Y or Holden Gemini works well. Any ideas.

Guys,

Thanks for the excellent discussion. Good point on having a look underneath first before assuming anything. Is there an easy way to distinguish between the H145 and H165 set ups?? Do I have to pull the bloody thing out just to find out what it is???
