Great as a spare, great to make a locker from if you want to try one, or great upgrade for smaller Datsun without adding too much weight.

Guys

I have a late model 120Y diff - it's the larger Borg Warner one. I had it in my car with no problems at 252rwhp, but have decided to replace it while I'm doing my turbo uprade.

$150ono = $100 it's yours. Pickup only, in Brisbane. If you provide payment I have no problems holding it for you until you can come pick it up.

At a guess it would be ~1240mm from drum to drum. Doesn't seem to make any bad noises or anything, certainly nothing I can hear over the rest of the car anyway!!

Tailshaft is basically the right length, but need to change the rear uni/flange over to suit the 720 diff and may as well shorten it a touch while you're at it - at least you have to change the flange in my case as I have the BW diff in my 120Y. May well be that the Nissan/Datsun diffs in the earlier 120Ys might even have the same pattern as the 720 diff, who knows.

Shock mounts are required - very simple change though as they're attached to the leaf mount not the housing itself so there's no risk at all of bending etc. Two little tabs on either leaf mount will be fine... 3mm plate probably heaps but I'll go 4-5mm while I'm going to the trouble of making them.

I'm changing to four-stud, so I'll need to have the stud pattern drilled and the centre machined down to match my wheels. I've decided I'll retain the standard 720 bearing setup, so all I need to do is modify/replace the backing plates, and organise brakes (probably 4st discs from a bluebird if they're easy to adapt).

also off the top of my head the 1500 diff was about 1350. was about 20mm a side i think which was too much for me. as my plan was to just cut 10mm off the end of each axle (as there is about 10mm of spline not used at stock 1500 width) then just cut the housing down to suit. but it was still a bit wider than 1200 width

1285mm sound more like a bare diff housing width

I don't think you pricks are listening, this is why I'm crapping on about it and gave it it's own thread :) :) :)

It bolts in, and it's approx the right length... end of story!!

I just went downstairs and measured it again for the 500th time... it's ~1230mm as a bare housing. Same measurement on the 120Y diff I have sitting two feet away, is ~1190mm.

Though the diff is apart, i remember that it's 1285mm from end to end including drums.

320

I'm not sure offhand what the 320 was, but those axles look like an issue waiting to happen... they look like about 15sp? Unless they're the ones you replaced.

seems that its the same width as the 1500 diff (which comes with alloy housing)

Bluebird axles will be a fair bit to wide, and will need to be cut down and resplined, but i dont know if they are wide enough to clear the undersized part
also the 720 and 1500 wheel bearing arrangement is much different to the normal passenger car wheel bearing arrangement. being that they use tapered bearings with adjustable preload all contained in a bolt on "hub" kinda thing
the axles are also threaded at the wheel bearing for the adjustable collar

so to use bluebird axles you would need to cut the ends off the diff and weld the bluebird style ends on to allow you to use bluebird wheel bearings. and if you were doing that its not much of an effort to cut the diff down to 1200 width

another option i was looking at if the axles werent going to be long enough to allow resplining was r31 axles. they are big enough to be resplined to the h190 spline even in the undersized part of the axle
but you still have the problem of the different wheel bearing setup on the 720 diff. so still need bluebird style ends and then you need to find a wheel bearing with bluebird bearing OD and r31 bearing ID, then same deal with the seal as bluebirds have it on the inside of the bearing and r31s have it on the outside

im wanting to go down this path for the 1200 wagon, bluebird h190 with alloy centre to shed some weight compared to the r31 diff i have now
but from looking at the 1500 diff it seemed easier to start with a bluebird diff and cut it down compared to making a ute diff work with 4 stud
but i also couldnt work with the increased track in a 1200 as the guards arent as forgiving as in a 120y

they are however a good "bolt in" diff if you dont mind the track increase and 6 stud

Aware of the issues with the bluebird axles/bearings, but until I have a set with the diff it's hard to know 100% the best course of action. I may retain the standard axles and just re-stud them, although again until I have everything together to make sense of it all I'm just guessing.

Curently my plan is to get some BB axles, suss them out and if they aren't something I can adapt fairly easily then I will turn down the centre of the 720 axle flange and restud it to 4x114.3, and run four-stud brakes (probably 910).

More pics when I piece stuff togehter :)

As a side note, a bluebird H190 is no good as it is the wrong width (by far) and I'd imagine the mounts are different also.

If anyone can however assist with locating cheap/free Bluebird H190 brakes/axles/backing plates that would be fantastic, and I'd be happy to continue the walkthrough with pics :)
