I'm thinking of buying a pair of carbs for my A-15, and I was wondering if all Mikuni/Solex 40/44mm PHH sidedraft carbs are the same? In other words, if I get the linkages and manifold for an A-15, will Solex carbs from a 510 or even a Fiat, Triumph, or VW fit on my A-15? The same question goes for Weber 40/45mm DCOE's, are they interchangeable or specific for each engine? -Andy

I managed to fit 195/45-15's in the front that is lowered 2" (shorter springs) but has 210/120Y struts/brakes. On the rear I have 195/50-15's with a pair of thin wheel spacers, and is also lowered 2" (lowering blocks). The only time I rub is going in reverse down a hill when I hit the brakes and turn. The wheels are ADR 15x6.5 aluminum that are supposed to be Front Wheel Drive rims, but they fit perfect with my setup. Someday I'll get pics to show this car! I heard a lot of people in Puerto Rico drop Toyota 3-TC engines (1.8L) in 1200's and that it drops right in pretty easily. A guy I met this weekend says he gets over 400 hp from these engines w/turbo. I love the A series engines, but it's got me thinking..... -Andy

I have an A-12 engine from a 72 1200 automatic. I am trying to convert this engine to a manual transmission, but the manual transmission flywheel for an A-12 or A-14 won't fit over the back of the crankshaft. The A-12 automatic looks like it has a different crankshaft than the A-12 manual...is this true?!!! Does anyone else know if Nissan used a totally different crank for automatic 1200's? I wouldn't think so, but it sure looks that way! -Andy

Is there any chance that we could get some of these body parts shipped to the US? We can't even get them here anymore really, nobody mades them except very pricey fiberglass ones. The worst is grills, nobody makes them here! If I could get some decently priced body parts that aren't dented and rusted, my car could probably win shows! My doors have rust holes at the bottom and numerous small dings. I need some new body parts!! -Andy

Cylinder head porting |

Well, yesterday I finished porting my cylinder head. Spent about 4 hours doing the last 6 ports, and they turned out really good so far. I'm trying to match the head ports with the GX intake, and you wouldn't believe how much off they were...I'm talking about over 1/4" of aluminum on the intakes! I would recommend anyone without a GX head to take it off and at least gasket match their ports. Using a rotary file in a drill works quickly and easily. Anyways, now I'm onto the polishing stage which takes a lot longer, but I'm sure the difference over an untouched head will be greatly appreciated once it's done! Then it's off to the machine shop for the rest of it's rebuild. Has anyone else ported and polished their cyl. head? How much difference in power did it make??? See ya later! -Andy

Funny, I'm doing the exact same thing with my A14 cylinder head as we speak. I tore it all apart, took all the valves and studs out and started porting/polishing it. The best way to match the header and intake with the ports is to grab a used intake/exhaust gasket and see where the gasket either wasn't compressed around the port, or where the gasket is blackened. I'm using a grinding tool in a drill to port it out first, then use 3 stages of emery cloth (rough, medium, fine) to work out all the imperfections and create a beautifully smooth and almost mirror finished port. After that I use aluminum polish and hand polish until it really is like a mirror. It's important to get the exhaust as shiny and smooth as possible, but it's not as important with the intakes. So far I have one exhaust port finished, took probably about 1.5 - 2 hrs, but it looks great! I used this same technique on my GX intake and every time I take it off, it still looks like a mirror. Anyways, good luck with your head. I'm going to have the machine shop put in bronze guides, new seats, oversize stainless valves, etc. Should run pretty good after it's done. See ya later! -Andy

Hey everyone, I'm still trying to get ahold of a manual transmission flywheel for the A-12 engine somewhere here in the US. I need one to put my car back together. Any help would be greatly appreciated! -Andy

Well I was actually thinking of buying another motor for the future turbo buildup and keeping this A15 N/A. Right now I'm running a rebuilt A15 with stock pistons/compression, a street cam (.229 duration at .050" .414" lift), and dual SU's. It revs to 7400 rpm and has gotten me a best of 17.3 in the quarter mile and gotten up to 6800 rpm in 5th gear. It doesn't have enough power for me while I'm waiting for the turbo setup so I was thinking of maybe getting a lot bigger cam and lightweight lifters from NISMO. But if I go with a lot bigger cam, don't I also have to raise the compression? I don't want to buy different pistons for it unless I can get them cheap, and head shaving can only get you so much. Maybe I will just be patient and wait to put all my money towards the turbo engine. In the mean time, I will start porting and polishing the head that I will use for the turbo engine. Are there any water jackets I should watch out for in the head with the straight through ports? -Andy

I have two cylinder heads from the same type of car (1978 B210 GX coupe) except one was auto and one stick. Both have oval ports and the same size valves. One has the large open circular combustion chamber, straight through intake ports that are the same size all the way to the valve, and no holes for the water circulation through the intake manifold. The other head has smaller heart shaped combustion chambers, the intake ports are casted differently to swirl the air into the combustion chamber, so the ports become smaller down toward the valve, this head also has provisions for water circulation through the intake manifold. Just goes to show that there are a lot of cylinder head variances with Nissans, even the same make/model/year! So what I want to know is which head is better? I'm going to be sinking a lot of money into one of these heads very soon, but I'm not sure which intake port design is better for performance. Eventually I am trying to put a turbo on my car, so I don't know which head will be better for that. Any help would be appreciated. See ya! -Andy
