The Audi permanently lives with the mozzies at the moment. The $2000 rust bucket 1200 has booted it out! My mates think I'm crazy.....
If he wants to meet with them and it helps my case then he can be my guest!
With the possibility of me putting the turbo back on later, the thing is, he knows I'm going to do everything properly. He's a bit of a car enthuisiast himself so he knows what it's like. He also knows that there are thousands of cars driving around that are in totally un-engineerable condition (not from a legality angle but from the perspective of that brakes, handling, etc are just so inadequate on these cars) that should not be allowed on our roads and will get away with it because they never try to do it legally hence no one gets to see how unroadworthy it is. That is until they get pulled over by the cops for doing something stupid.
I also heard that they wil be further tightening the rules soon. Possibly along the lines of the good old power to weight ratio. That would completely root me judging by this new equation- 250rwkw(hopefully!) + 590kg = not happening jan! F#$king bureaucrats!!!!!!! Fun police on steroids.
mradtee23- Yeah that's true! I need to do some comprehensive testing forwards, backwards and sideways (!!) before the little fella hops on board anyway! If he gets half as big as me he won't need a kiddy seat by the time he's 4! Stuff the new booster seat rules, he'll hit his head on the roof the poor sod!
Spoke to my engineer again today and the bastard keeps feeding me glimmers of hope! He's going in to Vicroads head office Friday or Monday to discuss it with them in person. I'm still not assuming I'll be able to do it but I told him I would just do the conversion and engineer it as a non turbo if I had to. He's happy with that so full steam ahead as planned! unfamilia- We'll hopefully have moved to the new house in 12 months so I'll get half the 2 car garage there. I'm actually gunna put a temporary wall in between both bays so I don't inadvertantly repaint the Audi!! My hats off to you working in the open! Good work!!
Matty, that's not beer mate, it's liquid inspiration! It's the lubrication to get my joints moving when I couldn't be stuffed! It's....... Aaah you get the point!
Thanks blokes. I'll definately re-prioritise my life but I won't be able to just completely put datty on hold. I'll try but...... 5 years is definately a good stint! If I get my engine in by 3 years I'll be stoked! Here's a few foters-
Crossmember mid modification (took original 1200 mounts off) just need to work out what will suit SR. Thinking angle iron at this point.
Took off front skirt and cleaned off surface rust.
Took out the dash for wiring and clutch/brake setups.
More bloody rust in the floor.
And inside the firewall....
My confined working conditions.
Started playing with wiring.
Some practice welding to find the threshold of milo tin esque panel tin!
Big rusty bloody hole for front bumper mount plate.
I really need to focus on one thing at a time but I'm hopeless with time management!!!
Oh, and the lad! He doesn't seem to comprehend the efforts I'm going to out in the garage for him yet! In good time I'll have him out there with the welder!!!
Hey Carps, where you gunna mount your door opening switch(es)? When I do mine I'm thinking about mounting them semi hidden on the B pillar facing the inside of the tray so you sort of reach around behind the pillar (if you get me??). Interested to know your thoughts?? Keep up what is the anti-christ of my build (ie it's a lot f'ing quicker!!!) It's good to see your progress! And to make it worse you're a semi bloody cripple....
The main guys I use through work are Toll, Patricks, Canberra Carways. I also have a broker I use as well that gets quotes from the same guys but sometimes get a better rate. I'll get her email address and PM it to you if you like? She's based here in Melbourne and operates via email so pretty easy ti deal with. Ley me know if you need further help.
Thanks guys. Thanks for picking up the bits Larry. One thing to be checked when you go to use the engine is the engine mount spacing. When I dismantled the crossmember yesterday to make up new mounts for the SR it looks like a new section has been welded on to space the engine either forward or back. It didn't look standard so please be mindful of it! Thanks for the pictures, I'll check them out Tuesday when I'm back at work.
