You also have problems with the reversing light hitting the gearbox body mounts. I always fitted the gearbox to the engine, then letting the back of the box down enough so you could fit the reversing light. I'd then jack the gearbox up into the car. A few taps with a ballpein hammer to the front of the body mount can help, too. This is on the right hand side, obviously.
