Harry,
Somewhere in my piles of papers/mags I have got an article in them. If I can dig it out I'll fax it to you.
I believe that they work on a rotary srew principle but I can't really help you more.
Dodgeman can you help here?....
Dave

Hey Guys,
Now I know that many of you have had your say on the efficiency of turbos verses the roots blower9 I believe the correct term is adiabatic efficiency ), but there is another supercharging option that is worth mentioning/ exploring and that is the (excuse the spelling here please ) Lysham screw supercharger- presently made by Flemings Thermodynamics and marketed as the 'Sprintex' blower.
To the best of my knowledge these are actually MORE adiabatically efficient than a turbo- one drawback though, price!
Perhaps Dodgeman may be able to enligthen us further on these....

Chris,
Further to that last comment my curiosity got the better of me so I rang him- its definetly a cabin pressuriser off either a Vampire, but more than likely Canberra bomber-sound correct?
Cheers

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your comments- next time I'm talking to my old mate in Wanganui, Mr Chisholm, I'll get those supercharger facts straight for you!We are though turning the hands of time back to around 1985-6 so the old memory gets a bit clouded, but you've got my curiousity up now!
Your observation re being too small is 100% correct, even left to idle for a few minutes if you put your hand on the plumbing to the inlet manifold it got VERY hot, one can only wonder what the car would have gone like with a modern, decent sized blower.
The more I think about it probably the easiest and enjoyable setups for Steveo would be a Toyota MR2 blower ( they're worth about $350) here in NZ, they have mounts on them very similar to an alternator so very easy to mount up, on an A14, drawing through an 1 3/4'' SU- by far the easiest carb to set up.Done correctly if it did'nt cut low 14's I'd eat my hat.
But then there's the lure of those bloody windmills.....

Steveo,
To answer your original question, yes, I've had both a supercharged and a turbocharged A14- in the same car/ drivechain. .The turbo installation was kindly posted by L18110 and I would advise you to have a very close look at the log style inlet manifold as this will ensure even air/fuel distribution and can be relatively easily and cheaply constructed.
The supercharger was actually an old Marshall blower( cabin pressuriser) off a world war 2 'Victor" bomber, which was overdriven like crazy to produce 8 lbs boost on a standard A14. I used both a drawthrough setup( 1 3/4'' SU ) and later a blow through setup with an early Link fuel only computer, and a small intercooler.
What did they go like? I loved them both- the supercharger was absolutely AWESUME off the line, as soon as the throttle was opened it was into it big time, and I would thoroughly recommend using it inb either a rally car or on the road.
The turbo was simply a little weapon, nothing like the supercharger off the mark but man could it fly once the car got moving.
To put the 2 into performance figures both on 8 lbs boost,in the same car with exactly the same drive chain/ final drive on the same drag strip, the supercharged car did 14.6 @ 86 mph, the turbo 14.3 @ 93- however with the turbo I had the option of uping the boost to 12lb which gave ( after some further head work, extra injector etc) 13.7 @ 107mph.
As far as driving it on the street goes to be honest I probably got myself in more trouble with the supercharger in the wet as it was so instant, however you have to decide if you want awesume, instant grunt, with that delicious whine that the roots type blower offers, or big top end and refinement when off boost that the turbo offers.
What I can absolutely guarantee you is that if you ever get to drive a good supercharged engine you'll need to be forceably removed from the drivers seat because ther's no way you'll let go of the reins....
Any questions drop me a line.
Dave

Hi Jimmy,
With you being in the States I can't really help you too much with the bits, but I would love to hear some more from you on the drivetrain that you used to get the Datto into the 9's- that is a HUGE et. for a normally aspirated engine.

I really don't know if Kelfords stock billets.
What I do know is the F29 grind is a tried and tested rally/ hot street/ club circuit grind and would be an excellent place to start.
Honestly I would'nt get too worried about special lifters etc, the standard gear is pretty bullet proof and over engineered ex factory, so unless you're chasing 150 + hp don't waste your time and money.
