How late are you going to be around the shop? I'm dropping my daughter off at PDX around 4:30pm.

Might be able to go to the races Saturday night. My daughter and her boyfriend are in town this week. I'll be dropping them off at PDX late Saturday afternoon and might be able to head for the track afterwards.

For you autocross fans, NWAA (North West Autosports Association) is having another race on Sunday July 15th at the Deep River site (Mile post 12 on Hwy. 4 on the way towards Long Beach). NWAA is a really laid back club that puts the emphasis on having fun. They have smaller turnouts so you usually get lots of runs. Last race weekend the GF and I put in 20 practice runs on Saturday and 8 runs on Sunday. Most runs the car has made in one weekend.

Hi DD,

I can see 3 things contributing to the lower body roll, possibly 4.

1. Much stiffer tire sidewalls. They don't deflect nearly as much as the old tires.

2. The aluminum wheels are noticeably stiffer than the steel stockers. You can feel the difference.

3. Lower center of gravity. Not a big change but it should help.

4. Slightly wider track?

The basis for #2 comes from experience gained many years ago. I re-drilled some Fiat mag wheels to fit my Dato. The wheels were the same dimensions as the stock 12" wheels, both in width and offset. The tires were transfered from the steel wheels to the aluminum wheels so the only change was the wheels. The difference was quite noticeable, with the car having a more direct feel to steering inputs.

The lower control arms are modified B310 parts made from 2 LCAs cut and welded to create longer LCAs for negative camber (2deg.). To take care of the bushing bind issue a wedge was cut out and the LCA welded back together just outside of the bushing. This creates a longer LCA that angles forward to remove the binding of the bushing.

Vague steering with poor self centering is a trademark of stock caster settings. Nissan's choice was to make it easy to park with the manual steering.

The fix is to increase the caster. This will firm up the steering feel and make the car more stable. It can also increase grip in tight corners where you have to use lots of steering input. I would estimate that in the range of 3 to 4 degrees of positive caster would work well for a street car.

I'm running 7.1 degrees of positive caster in my autocross car. Feels good on the road and track but is a bit of a hand full when parallel parking in town.

Look for adjustable or shortened radius rods/ caster rods/(insert many other names for the same part here...).

Yep, sounds like a fuel delivery prob to me too. What shape is the gas tank in? The pickup screen in the tank may be getting plugged, and the sit time gives allows the vacuum in the suction side of the pump to drop.

Try inserting a fuel presure/vacuum gage on the intake side of the fuel pump and see if you are developing vacuum in the pickup line. Also you can use the same gage on the outlet of the fuel pump to verify the fuel pressure delivered to the carby.

Keep in mind that the dual plug arrangement was an efficency and emission tweak. If you read the operating principals in the factory manual you will find that the dual plugs were only used at lower throttle positions to get a cleaner and more complete burn. At higher power levels the ECU reverted to single plug operation to reduce detonation. At high power output dual plugs promote detonation as the 2 seperate flame fronts collide.

Atleast that's what I remenber reading in my 1980 Z20 manual...

On the US spec front wheel drive 310's (sorry, I don't know the vin number prefix) the "T" in the lower radiator hose had 2 holes in it, one for the heater return hose and a second for the thermo switch.

On my golf radiator the thermo switch is on the radiator tank that is in the center of the radiator flow wise. The golf radiator is a 2 pass cross flow.

I have a manual switch wired in parallel with the thermo switch so I can run the fan between runs to cool the engine down when I'm racing.
