Those "Pitroad" japanese guys lack entrepeneurship. With the amount of 1200 Dattos and 120ys in Australia and NZ plus the available market in the US for B210s and 210's +310's , this guys could had made a fortune....imagine back in the 70's.....80's.....90's....even today....the A series and all the 1200/B210/210 cars would had achieved stardom status much like the 510s and Z cars with all those parts and all the good reputation as small swift cars it would had gotten with these Pitroad parts.

What a shame....missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime.

I do not think it really is a matter of looking "forward" or "back" enginewise, it is a matter of enjoying life, enjoying what you have, w/o comparing ourselves to someone else. Given the A engine is in the car at this time....modify it!!
If you want a swap....if that is really what you are looking for, do it. But the A series can become a cool motor.
If swapping engines, then consider other things than the L engine, because the same arguments presented against the A series and in favour of the L series will be made by others as soon as you have the L series in......I can hear that already....why did you swap that old engine...why didn't you go the CA or KA24 route...or the SR20...or the SR20DET...or the 13B rotary....or the 20B 3 rotor....or the V6......and the list goes on....a rat race...never happy nor content...always comparing...always peeking at other cars...not with peace of mind...but with the rat race bug in...LOL......like the energizer bunny..... it goes and goes and goes non stop. LOL

Just making a common sense argument....once you open the pandora box......anything goes....

All of what I said applies to a street car....if you were planing racing.....then we would have to go to a different chapter in this book....

Both the L and the A series are fun. Now, The look of an A series engine with twin sidedrafts can not be matched. There is something to that look that no matter how much more power the L engine has over the A series one, the engine bay of an L engined Datto can not duplicate.

As I see it today, feb 07, I would go for the A series engine. Reason being that ( aside from looks ) you have to feel an A series modified to see how fun, fast and amazing this little motor is.
You are going to miss out on the A series if you ditch it for the L series.
Unless looking into racing against larger motors, if you want to have a great time, and a fast light car, go the A. The time you will spend thinking about the swap, you will use it straight into modifying the A series. There is also A series modified engines around, for the same reasons there are L series around. A lot of guys are swapping motors. The L series is cool, but missing out on a modified A series...not needed.
Yes, the L series might be a more torquey motor...but it is not about having the fastest or mightier motor...it is about feeling the performance and life of a modified engine....that is what I enjoy
Do not miss out on having a modified A series. Look around, you will find plenty of modified A series engines.

There is no stupid questions when you are a carefull person and take no chances.
You are smart, the biggest mistake is to assume things, there is only actual knowledge, asumptions lead to costly mistakes.

Jamie I really would think that dual dgas 38's would be too much

.. perhaps BlueMax....On a full modified engine I think it would work wonders( 38 DGAS). If it is a stock motor or mildly modified, perhaps a twin 32/36 would be more efficient.

If we can have 2 DCOE 40's downdraft, then 2 DGAS 38's downdrafts would be within the league.

Kululadogroen...any pictures???

That car seems to be in good shape . The accesories are not part of the integrity of the car , it looks rust free and sound mechanically and body wise. Off course a personal inspection would corroborate or debunk that statement.
The rest is personal taste.
