40s for road/rally engine and maybe a reasonably tractable 120 bhp (flywheel). Cam, Carbs, Extractors, Compression increase and screwed together right will achieve something like this.

45s for race (for say 160 bhp as stated above but not much happening under 6000rpm).
Obviously needs more work/$ to achieve this.

The facelift Mk 3 Cortina's (ie the one with what became the Mk 4 dashboard) did. I think maybe the earlier GT version too. (I had one many moons ago before I saw the light!) Mk 4 and 5 did too.

I recall it basically just clamped onto the suspension arms and diff and I think they could be adapted to work with leaves (although a fair bit wider than a 1200 I'd think.)

Identical to the typical A12 head except it has heart-shaped combustion chambers.
Why was this a "legal alternative"?
Did some Datsun 1200s come with this head?

All the A12s I've seen (in NZ) have heart shaped combustion chambers?

The only A series head I've seen with anything else (almost 'hemi' like I think) was an A14 oval port but not common here (generally oval port / Heart combustion chamber.)

A simple slipping clutch doesn't make any noise in my experience. Doesn't sap power either in fact you'd expect it to rev out freely/quickly (not slowly) once it starts slipping.

Thoughts about the 'sound' - any chance the clutch plate is being installed round the wrong way and/or is fouling on the flywheel bolts? If so maybe it's working as a friction drive rubbing on the flywheel bolt heads? (Grips initially until rolling/power overcomes the resistance)

Were the clutch plates you've replaced burnt out? Were there hot spots on the flywheel or pressure plate?

Apparently the 60L 5spd (non-dog leg shift pattern overdrive) are more available in the NZ than in OZ... Is there anyone in NZ who wants to sell one?

Maybe - if you have a no hassle plan for getting it over the ditch.

Approx what model year/s is a KB Laser? (Presume we are talking Ford Laser/Mazda 323?)

Pity it's not in NZ or I'd be very keen on this for my racecar. The damaged parts/gears are both standard 60 series parts.

In simple terms, lathe off the damaged gear from the cluster and weld on a standard one.
Replace the input shaft/gear with standard one.
I've seen this exact same breakage fixed in this way on a 56A 1:1 5-speed. You can see in the picks the layshaft has already been cut/welded.

(Of course this means cutting up a standard 60 series 5-speed but these are reasonably plentyful here in NZ.)

Bob's your fathers brother! One highly desirable, stronger than a 56A, close ratio 5-speed.

I run 11:1 compression on a 1287cc A series. 15 years on 96 Leaded then 95 Unleaded plus Lead replacement Additive (usually Red line or BP Valvemaster) with no problems.

Cam timing/overlap will come into it.

We tried this on a mate of mine's 120Y coupe racecar. Undrivable/Unpredictable/Diabolical was the outcome on that car. All we did was flip the main leaf with the eyes, then using a big vice forced them all back together. Ride height looked good but the above was the outcome.

Put it down to experience and ended up fitting coilovers and five-linking the car. Thinking about it afterwards the upside down main leaf was of course cancelling out the rate of the rest of the leaves and had a 'dead' feel to it.

Pretty much worked like a length of angle iron being about that 'springy'!

Pretty sure that mine were reset cold (ie not heated)
