Thanks. Yea, I remember also having partially filled containers left and used it in the chain saw's chain lubricator and wheelbarrow wheel just to get rid of it.
I am planning on cleaning out the steering box also. I just hope sucking it out somehow will work as I don't see a drain plug of some kind. To play safe I will rather use the gearbox's GL4 oil in the steering box.
Thank you very much With lots of effort I managed to find a service kit which consists of washers, gaskets and needle and seat set. I will buy it to keep spare because it is the only one I found in South Africa so far.
Need to change oil on the two but I really don't want to buy and find myself needing a bottle or 2 or even sitting afterwards with sealed bottles taking up space in my cabinet which was bought extra. I went to my manual but just want to get real world answers also from you guys. Gearbox 1.1 liter Diff 600ml
I am planning on buying 3X 500ml bottles for the gearbox. 2X 500ml bottles for the diff.
Hi all Been long while since I have posted here but I need advice from my fellow datsun experts please. I want to buy some Hitach SU carburetor rebuild kits while I still can find them here in South Africa. I have picked up it is not being bought and held in stock at my local parts stores. I managed to get the supplier database (supplies parts for the parts stores) and found the following code. HJL-38W Through research I found out this is the Hitachi SU's that was used by the 510SSS and the 180SSS The GX code is HJE-38W
Kindly can the experts on these carbs please advise if the two kits are interchangeable?
Hi all Haven't been on here in a very long time. I have a friend here in South Africa that bought a 1971 Datsun. Don't remember the model name now. But it was a family car back in the day with L24 engine and automatic gearbox. This car is used for rally cross events where classic cars of the era compete in stages needing to complete different obstacles. Some to mention are drag racing, oval track laps and gymkhana event, etc. All on a dried up dam surface. It gets quite hot at the event.
Now the problem and I don't know what would be best especially due to the hot temperatures at this event. Mechanical pump gave problems. He replaced with a cheap electric pump but it struggles in the heat. I recommended he go back to the mechanical pump method but he said he can't find one for this engine. Will a L18 one not fit? Which one would be better in hot weather and used for a carburetor. I don't like electric pumps for this application because what about fuel pressure.Probably will have to fit a pressure regulator. He said the one he currently is using is low pressure high volume.
Thanks for the link. I did some reading. It seems that the A14 alternator which sits at the top left next to the distributor will actually work if used on a A12 which bolts down below. I will see if I can find one and do trial fit. If not, I can just return it. I think there will be here at local scrapyards
Hi all My Lucas alternator I have decided to strip and service. I am however concerned about the difficulty of finding service parts for this very old model alternator. Is there anyone who did a more modern alternator upgrade on early model A12 engines with the alternator sitting down below under the block's water pipe?
I used fuel to clean mine. My father helped me when we cleaned them. The dome and slide thing inside we polished with some brasso to get it perfectly clean and they must have a very smooth movement. Try to do everything in a very clean environment. I have used ATF but found I have to frequently topup as it uses it up quickly. Through research I found a british company on the internet who restores SU carbs. They suggested a 20W weight oil. Locally I could'nt really find it so I noticed my old scrambler shock oil is a SAE 15W. I used this oil and it is working great. Car is driving smoother and also is better on fuel economy. Also don't have to topup so often.
I have an idea the transmission bushing is worn, but not that much. Car has 150 000km on it. I am grabbing it by the propshaft yoke to see how big the play is at the transmission bushing. It is at a guess 2mm play if I try and wiggle it. I am tempted to say I think it is the propshaft that is out of balance and/or the uni's that are also worn.
