. I laught when I read you post.
Good points you made there.
Myself drive two cars. One is my normal family car and the other is my Datsun.
My Datsun is my toy.
I feel so sorry for such people that get big heads because of what they do.
We can just pray.

LONG LIVE THE DATTO LOVERS

Bosch is very good.
My other car (Volkswagen) has a complete bosch electronic fuel injection system.
No problems. Actually all volkswagens in south africa of the 80's and 90's and possibly still in production have bosch fuel injection systems.
I know of quite a few that have far over 300 000km with the same original fuel pump still running.
I will reccomend Bosch.

Sorry to barge in on this forum, but i have something else also to ask about the speedo.

When I drive from standstill away then speedo starts to climb as the speed increases. Ok this is fine.
BUT what I have noticed is that the needle jumbs about 2mm up and down as the speed increases up to 40km/h and then it starts to get less.
At about 60km/h it still has a very small bouncing effect of about 1 mm.
Is my speedo starting to wear out or is this just something our dattos do. When my clutch was removed I removed the speedo cable to look if everything is fine.
I cleaned it and put some oil on it and placed it back in again. So I do not think it is the cable.

Thanks.

DAMN IT!!!!!!

I just phoned a Cylinder Head repair shop.
The guy said that as far as he could remember all datsuns that came in the 70's to south africa has copper valve seats or a soft metal valve seat.
He said that over time these will wear out and I will have to replace them with hardened valve seats for unleaded.
As far as I remember Dodgeman is busy with this on his GX head.

I will maybe do it then next year.
While my cylinder head is of I can admire the nice and new looking cylinder bores asif they have'nt driven even 2 kilometers while in fact they will have about 70 000km on them by that time.
My datsun is a daily driver, mostly because I enjoy driving it.

Dodgeman

You 100% understood what I ment.
Basically why I am asking these questions is that I want to go over to unleaded.
If it damages my valves and the stuff Dodgeman mentioned I will then take off my head and prepair it for unleaded.
I am actually bargaining that this will never have to happen. But in this process I do not want to damage my head in ANY way as it is a genuine GX head.
I will cry myself to death if it gets damaged.

If only the valve guides gets damaged then I will replace them when they are damaged.
Thanks for all the replies.....

I drive a Volkswagen and a Datsun.
Yes, you are right about the Datsun.
But just after my Datsun I will take my Volkswagen.

Now I want to ask you something.
Did you ever see a volkswagen engine blow?
That will be the first I have heard about it.
Yes, yes I know this is a Datsun website.
Why I drive these two cars is because they are both reliable and cheap to maintain.
And because I LOVE MY DATTO
I probably would have driven 2 sedans if they were still in production today.

I have seen worse things done to volkswagens.
Over and over and over again.
They are still driving.
Was'nt it just a bad clutch?
Put a new clutch kit in and a new flywheel and try it again.

I am thinking of using a specific petrol company here in South Africa.
They have recently launched a new unleaded petrol.
They are advertising that their fuel are direct injection compatible.
This does not have efect on me of course.
BUT. They also state that they have stuff in the fuel that they call "lead replacements" and also state "can be used by most cars that use leaded fuel".

Hopefully they did research on the problem that I will have if I use normal unleaded fuel.

Thanks for the info Dodgeman.
Something else.
If the valves do grind away steadily as you have mentioned at the valve guides due to no lead to protect it, wil it cut so deep that it will get to my GX head's aluminium?
Or is the valve guides too thick so that I will notice that something is wrong before this will occur. For example noisy valves or rattles.

Hi all

I know this has been discussed previously, but I ran a search and it looks like it has been cleaned out.

I have a 1977 Datsun 1200GX.
In South Africa I have heard last night that in 2005 leaded fuel is going to be phased out and by 2006 only unleaded fuel will be available.
My questions:

1. If our unleaded fuel are not compatible with my engine. What damage will it cause.
I do not want to remove my head now to prepare it for unleaded.
I rather want to keep driving it until the valve guides are worn and then convert the head to be able to handle unleaded.
Is only the valve guides going to get damaged?
What simptoms will my datto have to show me this occurince.
2. Those of you running unleaded, did you have to reset the timing?
3. Catelitic converter.
I have talked to lots of exhaust shops here and no one is using catelitic converters here.
One guy said "we just take them off and cut the sencor's wires that are plugged into them".......WHAT AN ASSHOLE!!!!!
My dad drives a 1995 volvo 850 and did some research for when his exhaust goes and this was one guys answer.
Someone else said they butchered one open when it was removed and saw it looks like a normal exhaust.
They just put in another exhaust box and drill a hole in it for the sensor.

I know our datsuns don't have sensors.
Must I then just put on another silencer?
thanks

That is impressive for the stuff that has been done.
Nicholas. If I were you I would go to weber sidedrafts.
I do not have much experience, but do know they make a huge difference on power and of course fuel economy.

What the heck for fuel economy.
15 to 16 sec is impressive for a 1400cc.

Here I know of 2 guys that got the following:
1800cc volkswagen golf mk1
he put a audi 20valve head that is worked on it.
288 cam
and 2 sidedraft webers.
He gets about 14,4 sec on 1/4.

And a 92 volkswagen jetta.
with a 2 litre that has a worked head.
standard fuel injection
288 cam
he gets 16sec on 1/4 with racing fuel.
