I am from South Africa and unfortunately cannot help you with the price.
What I can say is buy genuine Nissan head bolts as they are better quality.
One of my head bolts cracked and I blew head gasket. Replaced needed stuff and installed ONLY the one head bolt and reused the other.About 6 months passed and oil got into my radiator fluid.
Investigated and another head blot cracked.

Moral of the story. Don't reuse and buy genuine head bolts. This is a part of your engine where you cannot be cheap.

Guys, My head bolts says 12 ontop.
What does that mean as you said he must use that have a 13 ontop.
I have the GX head with the 10:1 compression.
Is it maybe that I have the deluxe headbolts?
Will they handle the 10:1 compression as I sometimes drive my Datsun hard.I do not want the head flying off due to compresion.

To sidedraft Weber or not to sidedraft Weber.

Hi all.

this question goes out to all of you that have 40 sidedraft webers on your datsuns.

A buddy of mine has a A14 utility that he wants to perc up a bit.
He got hold of a GX head completely stock and also can get now a pair of 40 sidedraft webers.
I told him that I will ask on the website first before he continues to buy them.
Lets put it this way.
All the work he is going to do at a respectable workshop as he does not know much about engines and stuff.
My questions is: How much trouble are sidedraft webers.
Here at our local dragracing alot of people are using these carbs with alot of backfiring and missing and bonnets constantly open to fiddle with the carbs or something.
This includes a A15 nissan and a 1600cc ford escort.
My buddy does'nt want to put them on and then constantly needs to fiddle with them as this is the idea I got from sidedraft webers.Meaning " Your hands will always be dirty".
Is it really a pain or can you tune them on a dyno and not worry much about them like SU's.

Thanks.

A14Force

To comment on your post.
I must also agree that it is not nessecary to rev your A14 to hell to get power.
I drive a A12GX and cannot get past 6000rpm although it can rev to 6700rpm according to the manual.
It just screams like hell and does'nt feel asif it is pulling much anymore.
It also gets small vibrations when driven to 6000rpm telling me "Hey man! you are putting me through some stress now".
Does yours also do that?
Dodgeman told me it is harmonic distortions from the engine.

My best advice.Get it on a dyno if you have the money and check the power graph where your best power is.
I would say about 6000 to 6500 would give you max power curve.
This is where you must shift when drag racing or just driving like crazy.
If you go higher you will only lose power and cause damage to your engine.
Please don't abuse your Datsun.

Hi Nicholas

Why don't you buy a payon head gasket?
(I hope the spelling is right).
I talked to someone about two months ago about what if your head is skimmed too much what solutions can one have for it.
He said Payon can make a specific head-gasket for your needs in thickness in Jo'burg.
He once got one of 3mm thick he said that worked fine for a BMW.
It is just a bit of a waiting period for it.

Why do you want to lower your compression?
Tell us a bit more.
Did you test your A14 yet and how does it go.

Stifler.
Nissan South Africa website:
Nissan A14 utility bakkie=47kw and 97nm torque.

My engine plate:
A12GX = 56kw and 109nm torque.

My advice: get a A14 block, GX head and a decent carb.

Hi guys.
Everyone is prasing the A14 here.
I would like to get a few answers please.
When I wanted to convert to a A15 engine I phoned a place here that imports used japanese engines.
I initially wanted a A14 but the guy said I must take a A15 as the internals are stronger than A14.Please give comment on this?

Another thing.
One night I took on a standard A14 utility with my standard A12GX.
We dragged traffic light to traffic light that are about 400m apart. They were 3 traffic lights after each other.
Everytime when I hooked 3rd I started to visibly pull about a car length out of him.
Is the A14 then really so good?

OK.I must admit.
It is a utility that maybe are created for economy and not performance like GX.
What I mean is, correct me if I am wrong, to get full potential out of a A14 you must modify it.Weber,cam,etc,etc.
This is my experience. Please feel free to disagree with me.I enjoy a good chat.

Yes. I paid twice.
My poor dad paid with money, time and frustration with my mother's 1984 Renault 5TS gearbox.

they came out with a 5 speed.
One morning my dad reversed out of the garage only to find that something broke inside and split open the casing.
The gearbox was removed 5 to 6 times.
Due to repairs and then there is a winding in some gears and then there is gears running against each other making a grinding noise,etc.etc.
Eventually a 4speed was fitted and it is working now.Although it enjoys leaking a little bit of gearbox oil.
My experience with gearboxes is "IF IT BREAKS THROW IT AWAY AND BUY A NEW ONE".
I have never ever seen a gearbox that went in for repairs that did'nt come back correct.
Always something wrong.
OK.I know we cannot get gearboxes anymore for our datsuns.
This is what I hate about our cars. The scarse parts.

Wally.

Forget about wrecking yards.
I have also tried to find gearboxes from wrecking yards.
None can be found.
I will check tonight when coming home from work in a car magazine for some telephone numbers of places here that recondition gearboxes. Will mail it to you.
They will probably have some nissan boxes.
Your concern will be the cost to get it there.
And also if it is in good working condition.

My experience here is some people think they know how to fix or repair a gearbox only for you to install and get some gears running against each other when driving.
This is personal experience.
Ok I must admit this was some cheap backyard mechanic that I used to save money.
What a lesson I learned through that.

Dodgeman.
I hear what you are saying.
When I bought the non-genuine cable, I went to Nissan to compair to the genuine cable.
It is exactly the same length and contruction.
I pulled the cable on one end to see what the cable looked like that is inside.
It looked exactly the same.
Even the turning of the cable matched the non-genuine one.

I would gladly buy the genuine cable IF I knew it will solve my problem.
But I just cannot pay so much for a cable and maybe get no better results.
That is why I posted my problem here to find out if there is something I am missing or doing wrong.

thanks anyway for everyone's help.
Here is a place that I found out about that makes cables.
Maybe I can take it to them and ask them if they can do something to make it smoother and less grasping when used.

Wally.
The utility is still being made here.
And they are also being bought ALOT here.
Every 5th to 6th car you see here is a Nissan utility. This I have noticed.
Cheap to buy for businesses and hard workhorses.
Gearboxes and bodypanels for utilities are plentiful here in South Africa.

If they can only bring back the sedans and coupes!!!!

Please feel free to phone Nissan South Africa.
They will be glad to assist you.
