nzdatman, DD is right with the 12v onto the alternator field. Youre alternator will not be able to create ANY power without 12v being there. Ive also done an alternator swap and have found replacing the stock 1200 alternator to battery lead with a higher guage wire gives ~ .5volt more available power when the alternator is spinning. Also the other, 3rd wire is prolly a ground. hope that helps!

(i was gonna post this last nite but my net connection died - so here it is)
shouldn't matter, although if you are concerned you can hook up the 2nd output on the thermo switch into a relay, to then power your dash guage. if your guage needs a 12volt rail, u should use a relay to minimize the possibility of any resistance. also the ecu should be powered from elsewhere, rather than directly from the water temp switch so it shouldnt be a worry.

this website has lots of demonstration relay setups. very handy for the interested garage sparky. (who doesnt have a welder)

try ebay, a pair of SU's just went for $26AU. webers get sold fairly regularly there too.

any other electrical components youve put in the car could be drawing power from the battery, they should probably be connected up to the ignition switch(at your fuse box or elsewhere in the line)
or could it be a faulty cig lighter ? hehe doubt it.
i fooled myself for a few days one time when i wired up a killswitch incorrectly, making my jaycar HEI kit and a relay draw the batterys life to oblivion in 24hrs.
To test if it is your horn or any other relay is constantly drawing power (even when its not meant to), listen closely to the relay for a tick sound, while touching the main ground line to the battery ground. Relays have a distinct ticking sound when the circuit is closed.

Early 1200 A series will require a different but similar modified mounting plate.

any idea what this would look like ? I am in this situation with my A12 until i put my A15 in. The mounting plate i have from my A15 isn't the same as the one shown in your picture either..
