the z18 set the bathurst lap record in qualifying, then posted a dnf coz the donk couldnt handle the 35 psi. it still holds the record because the track is now longer. so the smokey z18 love needs to be clarified haha

see what i mean about using info to backup your argument that isnt all the truth? Ruredi, seriously do your research and make your conclusion because realisticly personal opinion biases advice. the internet is full of information, some of it is even true.

marks L series basic but well thought out setup (efi turbo) made 140kw at 8psi. to put it in perspective he sold the whole car for $5500 with suspension brakes etc. id be turboing an l banger for sure, suits the car.

its easy to dislike the sr 1600 because it is common, and the motors do have their weak points. but the bottom end can put out 300+rwkw in stock form and they fit in the engine bay like they were meant to be there. parts are plentiful and cheap, hard not to like it! ive put a lot of work and research into mine to make it super responsive and im proud of it. its no kawasaki head, offset ground stroked overbored sleeved ca19desct that runs on gas and cruises at 1800rpm (that suit 1000 wagons) but it does exist

good luck with your build ruredi!

a few things for ruredi. im not sure what people are worried about re: stressing about year of block for emmissions etc. I have a 93 model sr in my 1600 and the engineer was going to pass with aftermarket ecu.

call an engineer (sanjay) and get him to give you an idea of what you need to do. tell him only what he needs to know, not about all the plans with different internal bits, just capacity or engine. thats the best plan so you know you will be right

about all this spruking on the Z head... its common knowledge that it is a bit of a dud. its great for crossflow design but thats about it. its designed around good emmissions rather than performance. the ports are more restrictive than L series, can't be ported much because of water jackets and the combustion area issues equal a poor burn.

im not trying to bag the z head just for fun just counteract D's tent pitching rant about them every other post. dont get me wrong D is a wealth of info, i just think that if you take what you like out of info on the internet you;re not getting the full story. as long as you do your research and are happy.

you are welcome to come for a spin in my car and see what 220kw in a datsun feel like, although its not really similar to a revvy motor in a lighter solid axle car - itll make you smile

thats the spirit don, more herbs make a big difference in a light car. like D said, a14 is the same height as the a15. you should buy my old setup if you are going a14 - extractors into 2 inch system, computer, fuel pump throttle boddies coils you name it!

but either way you'll love the extra power. carbs compression cubes...

a nice simple disk brake conv to quickly follow

althought they flow really well you will lose a heap of midrange with a big plenum. they do look good tho and if you're in it for drag times top end hp will rise slightly

it works for sure, but ruredi would not require all that.

maybe he should go look/for a ride in various options

if you want to keep character you need to do something different. a banger efi turbo with really schmick manifolds. probably rules out a modern looking motor. simons motor has no R and D. His supporting mods are way over what is needed for a road car, and it is running e85 but its still a bog stock 120y motor inside with a turbo cam

no gas :)

D, you of all people should know the z heads reputation? It's built for emissions and anti pollution- I've heard an l series head actually flows better! George fury raced it because that's the homologated engine, there was no l series turbo bluebird. My point isn't that they're #OOPS#, he's a datsun/Nissan legend but he didn't necessarily choose the z18.

Stu you set your goals too small - 180 with a disco and I'd be on the credit card straight away looking for an ecu. But in reality dyno schmyno it's how it goes that counts!

Ruredi, what is in your coupe now? What box?

Ah, so ruredi you want everything?! :P

It's really up to you, and pretty much most combos will get you what you want. Personally I wouldn't fart around with LPG unless you are really keen on a troublesome underperforming motor that gets good milage

I was looking into the lz combo for my thou but my goals were different - 10 sec pass and cruise. Weight and cornering were no issue. If you want to be different then EFI l or a series would be cool. Ca has been done lots, but for a good reason. The z head is not fantastic, and if you are going to l series bottom why not just keep it all l.

Orrrrrr... If you want to go crazy and have some know how a ka head on an l series or a bike head on an a series.
