well, Datnats '05... what an experience!!! As many people have said previously it was really good to put names to so many faces. The "Datsun Love" was in abundance (accept from some of those cranky old z car snobs

) i managed to catch up with/meet so many of the dat1200 website fame. the show on saturday was awesome and the racing on sunday was just as cool. i'm glad i made the effort.
now for my personal saga...
after just getting the car ready enough to drive up to golburn, i had a fairly rough and very rich running car but knew (hoped) it would make it fine! seats folded down and loaded up to the brim we set off with the NDSOC melbourne cruise.
We finall made it around seven hours later, with the LAGWAGS having some computer issues, causing the timing to revert back to a power robbing 5deg! I knew that i would be able to pick a few brains the next day at the show and shine. and this was what i did, meeting and seeing the cars that had put so much effort into getting there i tried to work out my running issues, but to no avail. then i thought i'd give the old pre-scrutineering check a go. basically with about fifteen minutes of arguing with crusty pants head scrutineer (boy did i luck out there!) he had me with a quite large list of things to do which would even get him to consider me racing the next day. quite a task with very limited tools and only a supercheap auto that would be open for another few hours.
this is where the datsun love blossomed! loaded up with hopefull fixes from supercrap auto, me and my camping buddies went to work. then a few of the OZdat crew came to lend a hand, then a few of the queensland entrants came down and before you knew it there were thirty odd datlovers working on the wags! people were under it, in it, in the engine bay, or just there to lend there support it was classic! six hours later, she was ready for that crusty pants "head scrutineer" to view. we could do no more.
rolled up for scrutieering the next day, and luckily crusty pants was too busy to look at my car, i thought i was through! oh, mate... its a bit rough, i don't know... the guy says! obviously i need either a Z or a bajillion dollar paint job! ok pal, you tell me whats wrong. ummm the carpet could scrunch up under your pedals and affect them... i'll take it out. ummm i can see the vacuum line that goes to your boost guage... ok, i'll tape it up. so after doing this and going though the bay again i finally got someone who knew that we were all there for fun, as long as my car was safe. he did a basic safety check and i was on my way. this was truly a win for the people
positive camber, average brakes and street tyres made for a very slippery experience but the long sweeping corners and straights gave me the opportunity to stretch the wags's legs, albeit a little sideways
really it was great fun, i chatted with heaps of 1200.commers and made a bunch of new mates that i'm sure i'll see at the next nats. and i got to give my car a bit of hell around the track. possibly the ugliest looking car there, and with a big white LAGWAGON sticker made by four drunk guys at 1am the night before accross the back screen, i'm sure most will remember the legend of Lagwagon. so many awesome cars and guys, i'm proud to be a datto owner!
