Seems to be a lot of aggression up in Queensland... you boys still having trouble dealing with losing the Origin series huh?
Seeing that you both live in Brisbane why don't you meet up in person and sort this matter out - you can both run over each other for all I care... the only thing better than one less Queenslander is two less Queenslanders.
Sorry - just had to stir things up a bit. Happy Datto1200ing.

A14 re-commission... what do I need to do? |

Ok I need some advice...
I've managed to get my hands on a complete A14 engine and 5 speed gearbox - (not telling anyone how much I did not pay for it) - but it has not run in about 6 years. It came out of a running car of a mate of mine when he stuck a Toyota Twin Cam in his Morris Minor instead. The A14 is pretty standard, apart from a mild cam and double valve springs. I trust the guy so I know that the engine was fine when removed, so here's what I need to know.
What things do I need to do to re-commission this engine? Apart from changing all of the fluids is it safe to just check/adjust the head bolts, tappets etc and if all is ok just fit it? What things can perish if an engine has been sitting for 6 years?
The 5-speed was re-built but never fitted... so that will be fine.
Any advice from the Datto experts out there will be highly appreciated.
Matt.

I bought one of their 'Flame Thrower II' coils when I did the conversion - have to say that it did make a difference.
The only problem I seem to have is with the two wires coming out of the module inside the distributor... how do you make sure that they do not fold up and hit the rotor?

that's all I needed to know - I'll stick with it then. I always carry an old set of points just in case something goes wrong anyway.

I have one installed - coming up to it's second year now - and it seems to be running fine but this other post about factory a series electronic distributor's from the States (in the classifieds section) has got me thinking that I should get one.
Should I just stick to the rule of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it?'

Looks like someone is going to be paying a bit of money for it if it isn't a genuine gx head... I do like the intake manifold on it though.

Maybe I'm not trying hard enough, but I'm having serious trouble finding a standard, everyday speedo cable for my 4 speed gearbox. I've had numerous spare parts shops laugh at me - even had one tell me that the speedo cable would be worth more than the car - they are now on my death wish list. Surely someone out there knows where I can get one?

If it's only going to cost $125 or there abouts then it's a real no-brainer huh? Thanks for that advice - for some reason I thought it would cost a heap more than that.

I've done a bit of a search but cannot really find much on engine balancing etc. I'm currently building up an a14 and wanted to know if it is worth going through the expense of getting the crank and flywheel balanced - and if so how much would I be looking at?
