I think what this thread proves is that there will probably never be another car quite like the Datto 1200 which explains why enthusiasts such as yourselves (and myself) invest so much time, money, blood, sweat & tears on these little gems.

Long live the Datto 1200!

Maybe you should try NOS!!!

I've seen a 50cc scooter with NOS & it was truly awesome....... Relatively cheap too!

wayne13bcoupe - We're not fobbing you off or anything, It's just that this subject thread has been done so many times already & you can find all of those past discussions in the Tech section.

I only know there's a spot up here in Brissy called "Mark Gibbs Panel House" that does them..... Good prices too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't (not sure if it's still current) the record ET for a registered car held by a datto ute with a 302ci ford motor & 9 inch diff?
Low 8's

My initial response is that due to the fact that the engineering world is so focused on "fitness for purpose" these days, that the over-engineering of bygone days that has allowed for these options, reliability etc, has just about disapeared.....
As much as I hate to say it though - It certainly seems like the old Hyundai Excel is becoming very popular with the boy-racers due to them being cheap to buy & tart up...... As for class, well I'll let you make up your own mind on that one & it seems as though it's quantity not quality for that particular model (in my opinion anyway).
I can see it now "Excel Clubman Series".

Channie - Welcome to the wonderful world of Datsun ownership.
What the other guys are saying is right..... mechanics tend to try to rip women off (I know, I have a mechanic in the family). Just a suggestion - why don't you try to get hold of a workshop manual for your stanza & a couple of tools, you could probably make do with an oil filter remover & a cheap socket set from K-Mart - then you'll be able to service your car whenever you need + learn a bit about it in the process.
In my neck of the woods, the general concensus is that Penrite is one of the best oils you can get, but you pay for it!

Educate me here coops, a buggered big end is bad news by all accounts, but why would it drop the compression

Dont' get me wrong...... A spun big end wont' always drop the compression, but quite often the spinning bearing will create eccentric forces on the rod & piston which, over time will cause the bore to wear, thus reducing compression.
I should have asked if there was a 'knock' that accompanied this drop in compression.... If this is the case it is almost certainly a spun big end bearing.
It was the fact that 3rd or 4th bearings spinning are common on CA18DET's (due to oil supply problems at high rpm) that made me think it was a big end problem.

Yeah, I've seen the S13 rear end done a couple of times.
From what I understand this gives a slight increase in handling but is very time-consuming & quite expensive.
Personally, I wouldn't bother, but I guess It's a case of horses for courses.
