I looked into doing this when I started my project. From what I remember it's a bit more of a drama getting the engine to fit...... something about offset engine mounts to allow the starter motor to fit or something?? One thing I do know is that they're a great engine - very light & revvy. I had a mate who put a 4AGEZE in an MR2, he fitted a boost kit for the supercharger (mail order - ex U.S) & got even better performance.
Personally though, i'd prefer to keep mine Datsun / Nissan. But that's an individual thing.
A few ute's that I've seen have been done in "Spackle Coat". It's like a rubberised spray-on coating & you can change the thickness & match the colour to the body. Protects your tray too.
I have a brochure here somewhere, I can dig up if you're interested.
Yeah, I have progress photo's of my ute restoration. I've drilled out a lot of the panels & bought all new ones........ Underneath the rust is truly spectacular!
Sill panels, Vent panels, tray....... You know the story.
I just can't seem to get the pic's to post. Do you need to load them on to the photo album first? I went to 'my album', but can't seem to work out what to do there.
Have a look at any of your late model car manufacturers sales pitch & then compare to your Datto:- Coil Suspension Monocoque style integrated chassis re-circulating lead ball type steering system.
My ute was built in 1974, but I like to think the design is still current today & even after my conversion is finished it will be a lot more affordable than a performance ute offering from Holden or Ford.
You should be able to do a Silvia / 180 sx conversion for around $250 + sign off fee.
You can run any stud pattern you like, its just more work to convert the hubs over. The main problem is finding wheels to fit as your standard (i'm assuming 13") wheels won't be able to fit around the brake calipers. 15" is generally the best option, but you need to make sure you get a 4" offset, otherwise you'll foul on the guards.
Yes, there is a mob here in Brissy called "Mark Gibbs Panel House", that sell panels, bonnets, tailgates for utes, etc. All the panels they sell fit pretty well except maybe the guards (have a few new panels on my ute) They import from this factory in Taiwan via a importer in Sydney sooooo, if you called them you could maybe go direct to the importer & get cheap.

Coup1200: They are all spot welds..... Lots & lots of f#@$ing spot welds.
