Sounds like your paint's falling off because someone did a sub-standard of applying it - Or prepping it prior to applying.
If it was me, I'd be stripping the whole thing back to bare metal & doing it properly. Having been through this process though, I can only say that it's not for the faint hearted (perhaps I should add impatient or thrifty too).
Well the new (internal) speedo drive is in & working.
But, I have to say..... WHATAFUCKINGHORRIBLEJOB! (I removed the extension housing with the gearbox & bellhousing still attached).
Highlights included drilling a hole in the transmission tunnel so I could align a pin punch to enable the roll pin that holds the selector shaft housing to be punched out.
I've re-built a few shortened R31 diff's now & every axle I've seen that's been cut & re-splined has been thicker over the length of the axle than the machined / splined section & needed to be machined back to accept the spline profile.
Are you sure it's a 28 spline axle & not a 25 spline one out of a pintara?
I've got an old 28 spline open centre & a auto ratio (approx. 2.9:1) ratio crownwheel that you can have for the cost of freight if you like.
It'll probably cost you between $30 & $50 for the freight though.... Surely there's a 78 series borgey at your local wreckers that you can pinch bits out of for less $$$.
Can anyone tell me how to measure the castor angle? Is this just the deviation of the strut tube angle from vertical in a forward facing direction.
And how does adjusting this angle affect the handling? I guessing the castor angle is similar to rake on a motorcycles fron forks. In that the greater the forward sweep of the strut tube, the slower the vehicle responds to changes in direction (and the more stable at high speed). Is that it?
Next question - What happens when you get into negative caster.... Does this make the car handle in a different manner?
Maybe I should just be asking what a good caster setting is for a 1200 ute that you want to handle sharply but still retain some high speed stability?
Any help would be appreciated.... This has been bugging me for years.
