I havn't been here in a while and didn't read through the entire thread but i have read about this f'en fast A14 on another site. And i also noticed someone mentioned speed and sound magazine.
Here is a thread of a couple of months back on another forum discussing the article in the speed and sound magazine. Will make for intresting read i promise.
Got a stock ute with 5 speed box including reverse. Max speed i've done was 170km/h(gauge speed) and it sits at about 6000 - 6100 rpm's hence why i am now replacing the head gasget
thanks orangeb10. The guys at the engineering shop recommended me to get all of that done c'ing its an old head. There also going to do a pressure test to look for small cracks(I think). I'll only know the condition of the head late tomorrow or the day after
Ah thank goodness its not to expensive(unless head is cracked) to repair. Its been a long month so far, getting the ute ready for road worthy. Just wanted to make sure there are no hidden tricks involved that i needed to know about.
FAT-12H: I think Widget uses the silicone/nutlock on the strecthbolts.
What i know about my topgasget. My ute is very thirsty the last couple of days, i have to give it about 1/2 litre of water for every half hour of driving. The radiator water smells like exhaust fumes and the motor is running warmer than usual.
Now that i read this, it can also be a cracked head :(( Lets hope for the best and say its a blown gasget.
How hard is it to replace a top gasget? How will i know if the head needs to be skimmed(is there an easy way to test this)?
What i know i need: Torque wrench, 8 stretchbolts and gasket kit for inlet, outlet, thermostat thingy and top gasget.
Extractors on there own are pretty useless. You'll need propper induction + freeflow zorst. Powergains will be minimal with those componets. after that start looking at carbs, cams, headwork,.... those sort of things.
[edit:add] check out the tech section for extra info
Almost the exact same thing happend to me a week ago. I went into a righthand corner at "moderate" speed, halfway through the corner there was this perfect mix of sand and gravel on the road....slid out...I hit the left front on the pavement causing major damage to my suspention + plus minor damage to chasse. Been in for repears for the last 5 days but expecting it back today. I'm also expecting to pay school fees on this repair.
