I was at the creek on saturday.
Got too see the car and meet the man.
Thanks for being so honest and open with me about the build.
Shame i didn't see it running, I hope you get it back together and get out there soon.
I did come away with motivation to get my coupe finished for next season.
I stayed to watch the overs first race just before it started to ran and then left.

Once again very nice car up close.

yeah the Haltech aka racepak ones are cheaper and that is because they use a propriaty bus for all the sensors.
This means that you will need to purchase a "V-net" cable to connect any sensors in addition to the Haltech ECU.
Go to the Racepak website and you will see what I mean. these V-net cables aren't cheap either, they have the prices on the racepak site.
I was initially looking at this as well but after adding up the extra required for the propriatry cable it works out worse (for me) then either the AiM or Dash2.

Just food for thought.

Great units but good luck getting on for $1k these are probably closer to $2k, maybe without data logging you could get it down the $1k. I have been looking into these for my IPRA car so have only really focused on the data logging versions.
There is a third version from race technologies called Dash 2 (UK company).
The haltech on is made by Racepak based out of the USA.
The EMS one is the AiM motorsport MXL, which comes in three versions (also USA based).

I am pretty sure there are no modification codes in QLD or NSW that cover instrument changes. You will still need to remain current with the ADR applicable to your model and year of manuafacture.
Doing a quick review I identified ADR 18 (applicable from 1 Jan 1973), ADR 18a (from 1 Jan 1981) and then ADR 18/03 (I think that was 2003). ADR 21 (from 1 Jan 1973) this is related to impact on dash, which should not be effected given there is a steering wheel between you and the dash.

http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/motor/design/pdf/18.pdf

ADR 18 is the requirements for instrument layout. If you can demonstrate that your instruments comply with ADR 18 you should be ok. This also seems to imply you need to have at a minimum those instruments listed in category 1 and 2. There are additional rego requirements in each state that may effect you when you go to renew rego/ sell the car. In Vic there is a Vehicle inspection bulleting that requires all cars after a certain date of manufacture to have a speedo and Odometer but I couldn't find anything for NSW/QLD. I think prior to ADR 18 you didn't need to have anything on your dash not even a speedo.

Hope that helps

Bryan

Myles,
There is some good discussion about leaf live axle rear ends on ipraforum.com.au if you haven't seen or been there yet. The rules allow a degree of flexibility in the rear end.
If I was to modify the way the leaf spring mounted to the diff and allow the diff and leaf to move independently in the lateral and longitudinal directions (keeping the vertical movement synchronised), I could add lateral and longitudinal control arms IAW rule 9.10 and still stay compliant with rule 8.4.
this new lateral control device could incorporate a roll centre adjustment as b310gx has stated.

It really depends on how creative you want to be with rule interpretation.
The key thing with rule 8.4 is you must retain all the leaf spring mounting points and keep a configuration of live axle with leaf springs, but you can add more mounting and control points as allowed by the rules.
The fuzzy part is how you can take advantage of the new control devices and the tuneability they provide within the constraints of the rules.

Anyway food for thought if nothing else.

Bryan

exerts from CAMMS manual (3J rules).

8.4 Rear axle/differential for RWD vehicles:
• Live axles: The original configuration and type of all suspension pivot points on the assembly must be retained, save for lateral location as per article 9.10. The rear axle assembly is otherwise free. Fully floating hubs are encouraged.

9.10 Rear suspension components: Devices for the lateral location of the rear wheels on vehicles with a live axle, and any associated brackets on the body, are free. Brackets may be welded to the body. All other components which have any function in the location of the rear wheels must be retained unmodified except for bushings, which must comply with 9.3 above. Drive flanges, trunnions, hubs, stub axles and wheel bearings are free. It is permissible to add additional longitudinal rear suspension arms provided that all bushings are elastomeric and that the mounting points on the body only involve the addition of metal, save for a single hole per arm of maximum diameter 25mm.

Having just gone through the hassle of removing sound deadner from my coupe I can say cold is better then heat. When it is cold it chips away, when Hot it is more sticky/tacie and sticks to everything.
I did mine on a cold weekend using a flat screw driver and metal wedge, took a while but its all gone now.
I was supprised at the weight of the stuff overall.
Hopefully your motivation will get me motivated to get cracking on my build as well.

Myles,
Good luck with the build, I will be watching with interest for sure.
BTW IPRA restrictor size is 36mm not 26mm.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I have the price list for Alfa but no photo's so have requested a couple.
Greendog,
I would have to cut it up a bit and think it looks too nice for that. Thanks for the offer though.

Due to the IP rules I will need to mount my intercooler under the bumper so was hopeing for something to surround it.

Hi all,
I am setting my car up for IP racing and am struggling to find a fibreglass front spoiler and bobtail.
If anyone knows of one please drop me a PM.
Hoping for something like 120fly or Steve Draheim use to make.
I have tried contacting both of them to no avail.

Cheers

Bryan

PIGDOG,
The AAC (located under the throttle body) has a bimetal strip that controls a slide, the bimetal strip is heated slowly on startup, as it is heated the slide moves to close off bypass air, this occurs within approx 60sec of startup. There is no further feeback with the ECU with this item, essentially this is a dumb idle up on start item.

The Idle control valve (IAC i think it is called), the thing attached to the inside of the plenum is constantly controlled by the ECU via Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), this will change the open time of the valve to meet a set RPM target, the longer the valve is open the more air bypasses the throttle body = greater idle speed, this is the closed loop idle control.

If you have disconnected this item then you have no closed loop idle control. You can change the throttle stop screw to stop the butterfly from closing completely, thereby increasing your idle speed, but this is just masking your idle problem.

Bugsie,
As waz1200 has said, if you are running a air flow meter and have an air leak between it an the intake your ECU could calc injector pulse time for the amout of air. A faulty coolent sensor (there are two on the CA, one for the ECU and the other for the dashboard, they are located just behind the thermostat housing) could also trick the ECU into thinking the engine is colder/hotter then it actually is and this will also change the injector pulse time.

Thats my two cents worth anyway.

Well i've started the build or maybe I should say rebirth.
The machinist from my old work made up a restrictor for the turbo, which I think is a work of art.
Am a bit reserved to post too much about it until after the dyno tune, but with E85 I am hoping for good things.

Car is now stripped of all interior parts and getting ready for a new drivers seat, then hopefully off to get the cage fitted, It looks like crap at the moments all stripped out.
Jeff, I am definitly coming next weekend to EC and am quit excited.
Due to funds I don't think I will get the car finished before the end of the year but the prospect of going racing is exciting.

Will keep you posted

Bryan
