The previous owner could have removed the A14 & fitted an A12, but not change the engine number with the RTA. The only way to be sure is to check the engine number, which is on a machined area behind the distributor. If it had an A14,you'd have thought the seller would have told you.

Had a quick look & all seems okay. Hale that turned to slush instead of bouncing & making dents helps.
That rev range seems good, I thought it'd be less than that. So maybe the newer head gasket & a tightened clamp on the waste gate will be enough to go a bit faster.

Nice to see you've given up on drifting. She looks very good in the corners, & I bet he got worried every time you reeled him in. Which brings me to my next suggestion. Surely you have a small cam you could fit to give a bit more top end. & maybe a better head gasket so you can up the boost without it eating the gasket. He was only quicker than you in the top end, & a bit more power there would really be a laugh What revs are you getting, anyway? The car doesn't sound to be revving out, but that could just be an illusion. Well done there, Harry. just what I needed to see after all my Sunnys got caught in that hale storm this afternoon.

I've used Sunny balljoints & the taper is the same, but a spacer is usually needed under the nut on the bslljoint as that nut will run out of threads before it tightens. I have found that the Stanza balljoint is a different part, with more length between the mounting bolts & the balljoint. I don't know if the taper is different, but it will give more negative camber.

Harry, from the symptoms you describe, I think your problem is fuel running away from the pick up on right turns, when the fuel is low. You need to put a baffle around the pick up, so it's got a head of fuel at all times. My old 1200 wagon with the efi A14 did this, the harder you turned right, the longer it took for the motor to recover. R31's have a baffle that sits on the bottom of the fuel pump, so if you can find one of these in a wrecker you could get it fitted around the bigger fuel outlet. Or if you can get it into the tank, the foam you can get would do the same thing. I've had a tank baffled for the Sunny & the pump will still pick up after the fuel stops coming out of the drain plug. I got a radiator place to do the job, due to the fuel vapour problem. Next time I'm going to get this done, I'll get an intank fuel pump set up from a Navara fitted at the same time. With the bigger fuel line, you should be able to supply enough fuel for all those upgrades

Harry, have you replaced the hard fuel line from front to back. Maybe the line is enough to do a one off dyno run, but not big enough to supply fuel for 4th gear, when it's all been used in 3rd gear. Some 8 mm bundy line & a pipe bender is all you need for basics, & just duplicate the original line. Also, get the tank outlet changed up as well. This was necessary for my A15 in the Beige Sunny, & all the VW's my friend did engines for. Hope this is of some help. Handling issues no, character yes.

no problems. I called camtech myself & it's not one of their grinds. so it's a mystery cam. let me know if you want to get me to drop off the standard cam to them. Paul.

I called my friend today to see if he can remember where the cam came from. As the engine was built in 1993, his first reply was unprintable. After a bit of a chat, he said that to the best of his recollection, the cam was from camtech. Probably an old catelogue number. As Im not too sure what the cam is worth, & don't really have any plans to use it, if you pay the postage, you can have the cam. Though, if you had a set of washers that sit under the twin valve springs, I wouldn't mind swapping.
Just so you know, I've also found a stock late style cam if you want to go back to your original plan. & 2 54/86 cams ( 224a's) if anyones interested.

Yes, it's used, we had it in an A15 for a couple of supersprints, then realised we needed a bigger cam. The A15 was 1598 cc with big ports, etc, so the cam just wasn't good enough, compared to another fellow with a duplicate motor with an arthur johnson cam. I've looked in the shed & it has 4d655 stamped on the back. I tried googling this number, but got nothing back. It's not a wade part number, it's not camtech, or tighe engineering. It's got all the journals & lobes taped up to protect them, plus it is definitely a late type cam. Unfortuneately the fellow I got it through retired 5 years ago, but I might be able to track him down tomorrow, to see if he can remember who he got the cam off. It's definitely got a lot off the back of the lobe, compared to the standard cam that was in the same box.

PS when I got Camtech to regrind some lifters for me, they gave me grief because they weren't clean. Seeing as they were oiled up to protect them from corrosion, I was quite active in my reply. This brought the cam grinder himself to the front, where he agreed with me. bit of a shock for the counter jumper, really.
