Just wanted to know what exhaust system people are running to match the modifications on their A series.
I was planning on having an exhaust made up for my A12 which will shortly have high powered ignition, gx head, mild cam, single 32/36 dgav weber and 4-1 press bent extractors. I wanted to have a dual 1.5 inch system made but was told that a single 2 inch system with a high flow muffler would be the best. Your opinion and advice would be much appreciated.
thanks in advance

I'm interested to know what the going price is for a A12 GX head?
I was able to find one that has been renewed (shaved, polished, reseated and maybe more). It comes with a matched inlet manifold which i believe is off a later a14 oval port, as its made for a downdraft carby and is also equipped with water cooling.
Any ideas on what it might be worth would be much appreciated as i wanted to make an offer for it that seemed reasonable.
cheers in advance

Hey kobi_jae
Firstly, that is a mint looking 120y so hold onto it. I have a 74 model that i've had a similar problem with.
I found that the first cause of the problem was the fuel system. The fuel was dirty and clogged the filter because of a rusting tank. Changed the tank, filter and flushed the lines. This helped alot because there was pieces of junk in the fuel lines that kept clogging intermittently. I suggest checking the fuel pump and flushing the fuel system, try running the car on bp ultimate.
Then again it could be more to do with the carby itself. I changed my stock carby to a weber 32/36 DGAV and found that it wasn't as renewed as i was told. It wasn't that hard to start but it did drive as you described yours. A few things were wrong and needed replacing: float, power valve piston and the throttle valve (primary or secondary i can't remember). The throttle valve was slightly bent and especially affected the car at idle and accelerating up to 2500 rpm. Check the sight glass to see if the carby is flooding.
Check your ignition system: leads, plugs, cap, rotor, coil and points. I found that my rotor and cap were excessively worn and contributed to the "putt putt broom broom putt" driving experience.
Thats about all i can think of at the moment, best of luck with fixing the problem.

It all depends on what your plans are for the engine and car (sprint, rally, street, daily driver) i would put my money into an EFI system for efficiency

I had the same problem with my auto 120y, it would drive fine but as i reduced my speed to stop it would want to die. It would idle at about 700-900 so i would be forced to come to a stop gradually and click it into neutral. I found that this was exemplified when the engine was still cold or the weather was quite hot. I serviced the car and adjusted the idle and mixture. I also started running the car on bp ultimate and found it to be much better. I found that mine had to idle at about 1200+ in neutral for it to be reasonable when coming to a stop. I found that my carb was flooding when coming back to idle from acceleration.
Have a look at freeing up a bit of power at low rpm by changing over to an electric fan.
I was able to get my stock carb running well enough but decided to change over to a weber 32/36 DGV. After some initial idle and fuel mixture problem i have been pretty happy with how it has worked. Be aware that it will definitely take a lot of playing with before you'll be happy with it. In all seriousness i'd keep the Hitachi as its the most economic and smooth running carb you can use. Just take the carb to a reputable carburetor specialist and get it rebuilt as that
