Hi all, as per my earlier thread on trying to get rid of ever having to set points again, I thought I'd update you all on our progress.

We finished the job tonight, after a couple of hours stuffing around we've managed to get the B310 A12 running using an E16 Electronic Dizzy from a Holden Astra (NOT the same as the Pulsar E16).

It was a rough learning curve but it's all up and running. Thanks to all those who offered advice.

We've taken photos of the job so I'll try and update the wiki when I have time to include our findings.

Here's a pic comparing the two distributors...

I'll be sure to keep you guys posted then. Was going to post a comparison pic but I'm out of time tonight.

Stay tuned.

Went to the wreckers today and got a dizzy from an E16. So far it seems to be a little different which concerns me.

We may have to swap the shafts over.

Sounds interesting. Will let the owner of the Datsun know :)

If this had been a year or so earlier we so would have been a contender for lowest HP output. Ahh stuff it, maybe I can wind the mixture right up :)

Hey guys. Sorry for the much delayed reply, been quite busy.

Does this also mean the E15ET one will be the same? Apparently the turbo engine is more common around here.

mikeys_toy: I'll pass for now, I'll see if we can get us one here first before I look overseas :)

Hey guys, just wondering, we've been chasing for an electronic dizzy for the B310 (as it said on the wiki page) but I'm having trouble finding one.

Is there any other make/model which uses an electronic distributor which we can replace these awful points with?

Cheers

I should just add for informational purposes a follow up on this:

- Problem was never sussed out, we never found out what was the direct cause of this BUT I have a theory.

- Battery draining problem no longer exists!

Since we converted the car to manual that is. Note that the sound of the starter motor changed dramatically from a loud whine to a quiet crank (though this may be due to a heavy flywheel instead of the automatic flywheel. Heavy = larger rotational inertia = larger force it puts on the starter).

The battery draining problem may have been due to the way the automatic neutral safety switch works. What it does is has some sort current running to the starter motor which prevents the starter gear from extending (and thus cranking the flywheel) whilst the transmission in and gear other than Park or Neutral. Since installing a manual box this is no longer needed, the current preventing this gear from extending also is no longer needed and so this reduces the needed load on the battery.

Still the only mystery is why this load doesn't show up on an ammeter, though we had someone do that for us and I'm not sure how they checked the load.

So bottom line, those who own Automatic Sunnys with starting issues take this into account, keeping in mind we checked EVERYTHING we possibly could to try and suss it out.

I can confirm I've seen at least two B310's with air con. One was a 1981 Square Headlight model and the other was a 1979 round headlight model. Not 100% sure if these were factory fitted air con, may have been a dealer fitted option as some giveaways are the mounting position/bracket and the switch (located to the right of the choke knob).

So annoyed too because the latter car I saw at an auction and wanted to buy it but my parents wouldn't let me keep it at our house. It sold for $50 and has a perfect dash with lots of goodies for my GF's B310 I hate it when that happens
