Yes, that makes sense. Thanks!

Ah, so the small black box needs to come off of the dizzy entirely then?

Okay, based on the MSD diagram, and the FSM diagram, I think I have it figured out.

The MSD schematic:

The Service book's schematic:

Finished product based on first 2 schematics:

Basically:
-Run heavy red and heavy black to battery

-Run the green and violet from the MSD to the corresponding + and - spades on the dizzy, which eliminates the black/white and blue wires currently running from the dizzy to the coil entirely.

-Cut the ignition switch wire that splices into the current distributor wiring and attach that to the thin red MSD line, providing 12v switched power to the MSD

-Run the thin orange and thin black from the MSD to the corresponding + and - on the Blaster 2 coil.

Does this sound correct or have I fudded it up somewhere?

So, I've decided to run an MSD 6A ignition box and a blaster 2 coil on my car after I get the engine rebuilt. I'm reading the instructions and I'm a bit confused. The car is an '81 B310 Sunny with an A15 and a magnetic pickup distributor ( pic of my dizzy )

Here is the setup I think I would be using from the MSD instructions.

I'm confused about some things.

1. It appears that the blue and black/white wires run straight from the distributor to the coil (or am I wrong?). Am I just getting rid of these wires entirely?

2. The green-violet wires are supposed to run from the distributor to the 6A. Am I just adapting these to fit onto the distributor spades where the blue and black/white + and - wires are?

3. The red wire to a switched 12v source. It says there "From ignition Key. Original coil + wire." Huh? I'm not getting the meaning there...I'm not sure that the + wire from the old coil is hooked to the ignition solenoid or switch. Or am I totally thinking the wrong thing?

Help! I'm a n00b when it comes to aftermarket ignitions, so bear with me.

This engine has never been apart/rebuilt. I was able to find this out from the original owner.

Are the distributor gears aluminum or iron?

I'm probably going to end up just bringing it to a machine shop this summer. Knowing me it'll end up with a full rebuild.

I'm just weirded out by the fact that I put so many miles on before noticing the metal. I can't believe the rods aren't knocking like crazy by now.

I wonder what a rebuild will cost on an engine like this. Parts are still available readily and the engine is used in forktrucks still.

Okay, I've discovered a couple of things since then:

1. I don't think its the bearings. I must've put 10k miles on this engine before I noticed the issues. I think it'd be knocking heavily by now.

2. It uses some oil, but only at startup. IE, if it's been sitting for a time, there will be a puff at startup, but it immediately clears and it doesn't burn a drop while driving. I think oil is leaking into the cylinders while it's parked.

3. It seems to have good compression. Fires up REALLY fast and runs perfectly smoothly (by A-series standards)

4. the metal in the oil is NON-MAGNETIC

Here is a pic again, so you can see the color of the shavings:

If it likely isn't the bearings, what else might it be? The oil leaking into the cylinders sounds like a damaged guide/seal. Perhaps I should have the head rebuilt? I'd like to get this thing in better shape so I can start doing the mods I want to do. What else might it be? All I can think of is the gears on the distributor or oil pump being eaten up.

The car in question.

I dig that rubber skirt air dam you made. Might have to try that myself...

Oh, and since I took that photo, I've already seen it.

Cool, I really like that car, especially with the Cragars :D

That seam in the middle of the homemade airdam on there is usually hidden by a license plate.
