A quick poll. How many Datsun 1200's are here in North America? It seems our friends down under have a plethora of Datsuns and things, even those across the pond have a few. How many do we have here and where?

I own a 1971 "green bomb" here in Dallas. That's at least one.

Thanks for the informative note. This is quite an interesting board and I always learn something new about my old rust bucket of a car. Thanks. 87 octane it is.

I just got thru reading reading the 71 owner's manual for the 1200 Coupe (North America) just for grins. It states to use 90 octane gas. I been using 87 all these years. Is 87 OK or do I need to go the premium route? Car seems to run fine. Thanks.

Welcome and if you think your car draws stares you should see mine. Runs pretty good, but looks like a dump. Are old 1200 Coupe parts still available there? I don't need them often, but when I do its like pulling from a Grizzly. Take care & glad to meet you, JJ

I remember these kinda problems last year and the board folks helped get it straight. I no longer have the stock air cleaner and my carb runs good in warm weather. During cold it takes awhile to get going good. I don't have the link in front of me, but it had to do with tuning up the manual choke style carb.

These Datsun 1200's seem to be well made cars. Mine is a 1971 Coupe model and relatively trouble free. I bought it in 1975. I have had to replace a few head gaskets over time, and most recently the carb and rear axle bearings. Other than that it doesn't burn oil and gets great milage for me as a work car. The body looks like hell though. This thing cost me $900 back then and I think that was a wise investment seeing I still drive the dern thing.

Finally, job done. Had to go to the Firestone shop so they could press the bearing on. The only hard part about putting it together is the reattaching the brake line - it seems to be bent at a slightly different angle than when it came out. Going to fill it full of fluid and give it a road test. Many thanks to all for your involvment.
COLD and plenty!

Progress is being made! A dremel tool with a cut off disc does quick wonders to getting the bearing off. I bet if I had repacked the bearing like you said in the first post then everything would be OK. The bearing was stiff and dry of any hint of grease, but it sure started working again after getting the bearing retainer off. So, I'm repacking the other side for now and hanging on to the other new bearing and associated parts for future use. Because of this lesson learned, I plan to pull and repack the bearings on my 87 NISSAN P/U axle. Thanks to all who contributed.

Update. The bearing sets are expensive to say the least . I had to resort to vice grips for the other brake line . And yes, the bearings are really pressed on hard. Currently using a cold chisel to remove the collar . I do have a press lined up to put them in place. Next time....do a little maintenance and pack grease before another bearing ever goes out. Everything is easy up to the point of removing the bearings - arrrrg!
