1200 sedan. Started with extractors and exhaust. Ended up rebuilding the A12, got a little 25/65 cam grind, and a downdraught weber. 13x6 Cheviot Raiders and 185/60x13 tyres, twin front swaybars - a very 90s way of getting a budget handling upgrade. No-one made lowered springs for them back then. I loved that car, but it got written off.
Crappy photo from about 1990!

Fitted the strut tops yesterday to finish the lowering job. And trimmed the rear bump stops down to suit the shock travel. Also fitted an engine guardian - temp and volt gauge with programmable alarm levels.

Some cheap parts came up that may have changed the plan a bit...
And I won't have to feel guilty about cutting and welding stuff to get a L16 in there.

Last A14 I built in the early 90s used some sort of Mitsubishi piston - looks like it was a G32B piston. 76.9mm, 33mm Comp ht and 19mm pin. It was about .040" oversize for the A14 and with .020 or .030" (.5-.75mm) milled off the crown - really just the outer edge to get the comp height down. Trawl through an ACL catalog... Way cheaper than getting stuff made.

Car sounds great, and a nice tidy run.
One suggestion - ditch the wood wheel in favour of something that won't slip through your hands when you really need it...

When I was sounding the old fella out about the 2.2, without wanting to seem too interested, I kinda got the impression he wasn't too keen on getting rid of it. He seemed quite attached to his million km 720 King Cab stroker, even though it's now just rusting away in a paddock. It would have been a cool machine back in it's day - Recaro seats, big 2.2 stroker, early Z yoked-output 5spd box, custom fabricated alloy checker-plate tray liner... That was the part I managed to get! I think my chances of getting more goodies off it are significantly lower now that I don't have my king cab - mine was the same colour as his and seemed to revive that sparkle in his eye lol
But to be honest I'd prefer an L16 anyway. Ssee what happens.
Hardest part of the conversion might be tracking down another late model auto 120Y sedan to steal the diff and tailshaft out of...

Anyway, I drove the coupe over to my mate Nev's place last night and put it up on his hoist to sort out the exhaust. Since I lowered it, the exhaust was hard against the diff. Decided the easiest way for now was to simply cut it off just ahead of the diff and tack a dump pipe on. Will sort it out properly when doing the L16 swap. But it sounds nice and rorty now hehe

I know where there's a L20B 2.2l stroker with cam, ported head and twin 1.75" British SUs sitting around rusting away in a 720 king cab wreck I bought some parts from during my brief 720 ownership... I might give him a call in a few weeks time when I have some spare coin. It's not an L16, but it might do :P

Thanks guys. I prefer the coupes. The 2dr sedan only happened because it happened to pop up at the time. I was looking for a coupe.

More old parts coming back. A mate bough these off me a year or so ago and never used them. I think these on an L16 would be pretty cool in the Y. Sort of 160Z style - under the bonnet anyway...

Realised last night this was why I bought new KYB shocks for it 3yrs ago. They're 70mm shorter than the Monroe shocks in it, which I suspect are sedan shocks. So I now have heaps of suspension travel. Might just need to trim the bump stops down to suit, or drill them to make them softer.

Better photo

Fitted the King springs to lower the front. Also did the same castor mod as the 2dr sedan - moved the castor boxes forward 20mm by drilling 4 new holes and cut 20mm off the front. It drove so much better on the wide rubber with the extra castor, I had to do it to this one as well.
Lipped the front guards and trimmed the front lower corner of the wheelarch to clear the bigger, wider tyre with the extra castor pulling it forward.
Flipped a rear leaf to lower the back about 3". I'll need to trim the bump stops and extend the lower shock mount to get some travel back, but I'm happy with that ride height. The front will come down another 30mm with a pair of 1200 strut tops.
