As Stirlingmac said check the flow rates. This will tell you how much fuel you are gonna send up to the carbs and you will also need to know/find out how much fuel you actually need at the carbs. The return line could go back to the tank but if you use a surge tank you could send the return line to that so as to save you stuffing about with your old tank (ie new attachments). You will have an overflow on the surge tank back to the Datto tank. Seeing as the Datto tank doesnt have an in tank fuel pump, put one in between the Datto tank and the surge tank. Then use a larger capacity pump from the surge tank to the fuel rail. A fuel pressure regulator sounds like a good idea too.
One thing I cant understand is why mount a surge tank in the engine bay? This sounds far more dangerous than mounting it in the boot where there is much more space. Most of the stuff you need can be sourced from wreckers and a surge tank can range between $150-$300. Using a surge tank will save you a lot of bother with your old tank.

In my Ford ute I have an EFI pump supplying a Weber and I have had no real dramas. I have not bothered with a surge tank as the ute doesnt really undergo enough hard cornering to warrent the use of one. Surge tanks stop fuel surges and the starving affect when the fuel sloshes about when going hard around corners. If there was no surge tank, go around a corner hard and the fuel might not get picked up.

This so called sneeze you talk of...what is it exactly?? My Ford ute does something similar and I want to know what the hell it is!

When starting cold in the mornings it will wind over but not fire. Some times it does what could be called a sneeze back up thru the Weber carby. It looks real bad sometimes as smoke wafts out from under the bonnet. Whats the deal with that? Fuel burning but not firing the engine over? It usually starts next go of the key. It runs electronic ignition if thats any help. Cheers.

Yeah I downloaded it the other day, mind you it took about 4hrs to print the bloody thing, I shit you not. Thats on a HP Deskjet 670C, must be high resolution pages?

I dont think I will go with the front suspension setup in the book. Im gonna go with the Stanza front but then adapt some of the ideas in the book to the Stanza struts eg. adjustable height spring cups. As for the rear end, I have no idea what Im doing, it depends what diff im going to run. That also depends on what motor to use, and that depends on whether I want to rally or circuit race. Jeez I hate myself sometimes. Ive been crapping on about racing for ages but have go no closer still. No money u see.

Ive just had an idea to build a killer Improved Production Car. Running SR20DET with restrictor (CAMS Rules!)it sure would go hard!

Enough dribbling from me,

Simon

Anyone thought of those VW Golfs. One across the road from me has pretty beefy standard flares its one of the earlier models. Just a thought.

Mely I am assuming it is illegal to run the fuel lines inside the car eh. Thats a shame cause it would make it a lot easier, I know you can run them inside the cockpit of a racecar tho.
I personally hate the solid Datto fuel lines and would probably make the return line from the same sort of rubber you use for the line to the motor, just for the sake of ease.

Guys, just a little info of carby turbos from Zoom Magazine if it helps.

Blw thru system - "The problems are numerous; one of the biggest is that the carburettor body itself needs to be sealed so that boost pressure doesn't cause pressurised air and fuel to vent directly into the engine bay (Bang!)." Someone I think mentioned sealing all around the carby?

Blow thru system - "...ultimate carby set-up that allow intercooling, more precise distribution and metering, they are harder to implement and rare in comparison to the number of suck-through systems."

What about cold weather? Poor starts, freezing fuel (I mean actually frozen) and accelerator pump setings to lessen the lag between pressing the throttle and getting the go.

For more info get Zoom No.40.

My mechanic wants to Turbo my Ford XB ute that runs a 4ltr OHC XR6 motor (straight six) but the only prob is he wants to use a suck thru using an SU carby. It will set me back $2k but I told him to shove it unless he was going with EFI. Not worth the bother I reckon.

Sorry, thats just my AUS 2 cents, choose what ever path you want. Good luck, if they still go hard I dont think there is much of a problem.

Simon

P.S. The Edited part is to say that you CANT intercool a suck thru system. Sorry if that confused anyone.

Jesse, I have got some of those really old issues of Hot4s and Fast Fours. They are great. Its all old school stuff like twin Dellortos and Webers. There are plenty of utes in there as well with A12/14 and 15's and one with a Z18. Its pretty cool to see other peoples Dattos in magazines to get a few ideas. Also got some newer issues of Hot4s with the turbo powered utes. Also one shmick ute powered by a 2ltr Ford Escort motor. But I reckon Hot4s is a shyte mag now, too much glitter and rice stuff for me, you know bodykits, doof doof pro-logic systems and that crap that slows the car down. Go ZOOM Magazine.

I wish I had the time and pateience to sit in front of the puter and scan all these articles for everyone but alas I dont, sorry.

Cheers, Simon

Cheers NO1200. You must be throwing some big bickies into your project (Craigs pocket) but I can say now that it will be well worth it.

Did you send the ute in to get a full in house conversion ie. engine, box, diff, brakes, suspension etc?? Also what colour is it, or going to be?

Im glad someone around here can get a decent job done on their ute. I have a Ford XB ute which went for a heart transplant not long a go. Was supposed to take 2 weeks but took more like 2 months. Ahh well, I have the big beast back now running an OHC 4ltr XR6 motor and 5 spd and I am a pretty happy boy :)

Welcome to the club Rob.
To find lots, and I mean lots of posts and info on changing /upgrading your current setup in the front end simply:
Go to the left of your screen to the search option. Type in front suspension or Stanza Struts or some sort of similar wording. You should find all you need.

I think someone (correct me if Im wrong) is going to make a step by step guide for doing a front suspension and brake upgrade. If not, theres a challenge for someone who has done the conversion successfully already!

Cheers, Simon
