In order to sell cars, British makers needed to keep the taxable power[?] of their engines as low as possible, so small bores & long strokes were the order of the day.

Heard that yonks ago, I'd forgotten that.

The typical setup I have seen is to wire the fan with an override switch in case the 'stat or thermal switch you're using fails, or just for peace of mind (a 'running' indicator lamp wouldn't hurt either). And contrary to popular notion, the battery is there for one job: Starting. Once the car is running, the alt. is running everything. The idea is the loss from the extra drag imposed by the increased electrical load on the alt. is less that the loss of the mechanical fan. A 'puller' fan is much preferred to a 'pusher' as it dosen't block the airflow, a pusher will cycle more often in the same conditions. A puller will have to be slim to fit in front of the water pump pulley, I will be fitting one I have soon. I will also fit a larger alt, as a fan can draw as much as 10 amps.

Interesting discussion. Piston speed is the main limiting factor in how high you can rev. F1 engines are turning close to 20,000 RPM , which causes some to say, "HOW"? They are very oversquare, so piston speed is low, despite the rotational speeds. The undersquare 6s in my Triumphs (and virtually every old Brit engine) run frighteningly high piston speeds, it's hard to believe that Kas Kastner turned his to 8600 RPM (and they didn't always last to the end of the race either). I got 2 spare A14s with my coupe, I'll be following this thread.

My wife drives a silver 1988 Toyota Cressida, and I have an '87, with the rare 5-speed, I call it my 4-door Supra (I used to have an '85 p-type). There is a '69 Triumph GT6+, a '67 2000 Saloon, and a '73 Citroen SM sitting in my shop (1500 sq. ft., approx 30 x 50 ) And dd, I like big cars too, my first car was a '64 Galaxie, and I would like another. I can storm down a twisty backroad in my 1200 or GT6, but if I'm going to drive down to LA, I'm going to take the big car.

The mirrors on the ute are repros of Lucas wing, sorry, guard mirrors fitted to umpteen Brit cars from the 50's into the 70's. I see them in every catalog I get (I have two Triumphs). They come in flat and convex, and the heads are stainless. Find someone with a TR6 or Spitfire, and ask them. I used to have a set NIB I got in the UK, but I gave 'em away already.
