hi dave, you are now at the crossroads that i was acoupla years ago, although these lucky americans can get these gearboxes easly and cheaply, we can not (sorry to be the bearer of bad news) and as i have found out the hard way, they cost about a grand (if you can find one) and they can already be on there last legs because of there age ,and if it has been (rebuilt) it may not have been. mine is currently being fixed and rebuilt by a friend in his spare time (its been six months so far, although it would have cost me atleast two grand (according to some quotes i got) to get it done by a workshop. the advantage of the sunny box is its ease of fitment, but if i was to do it again id get a ex Lseries (stronger and you can just swap over the back of the gearbox with the more common Lseries box)aseries converted box from DATRATS.COM (look in links under businesses) get the taleshaft modifyed, hammer the trans tunnel etc (i think thats about it (apart from the crossmember((i may be wrong, there might be more to do))) or maybe get a bellhousing from dellow automotive to put in a celica, t18 etc box (t2, t3) although i think, that every time you need a clutch you have to get it from them (again i may also be wrong. anyway unless you can find a good deal you will be looking at somewhere between one and two grand, but having a five speed is well worth the money on noise and comfort alone. just my 2 cents

hi guys, im having lots of fun with my datto, but one thing has been annoying me,,,, the hand brake. i have the standard drums on the rear exept for the larger pistons (borg warner diff) it is very hilly where i live so i do need my handbrake to be good. i am not unhappy with the stopping power i have, as i have sunny disks and a booster, so i was wondering if a hydrolic conversion for my handbrake would be easier (and cheaper) than the trx disk conversion, to be honest i dont know much about hydrolic handbrakes or what would be involved in fitting one but i once saw one fitted to a commodore drift/road car an it got me thinking.

hey, im not expert, but if you have too wide wheels especially on a light car like the 1200, arnt you going to loose grip? i meen in the dry you might be ok with the increased suface area if the tyres are sticky, but the thing that springs to mind is a woman walking on high heals on dirt will dig in to the dirt because the weight is on a smaller concentrated area. if she was to walk on the same dirt on sand shoes she may not even make much of an inprint because the weight is being spread over a greater surface area. i dont know if i have made my point, hell, i said that im not an expert, but legal 6's or sevens might work better , be lighter, you could still have low profile to stop tyre roll and you might be less prone to aquaplaining. i may be wrong but that is my thought, so im open to other ideas

as i have said b4, i will throw a t50 Toyota box in to my car as soon as funds allow, unless i can find a cheap alternative (eg can find one of those vanette 5 speeds people here are talking about). i have a friend with a t18 which he has just dumped behind his shed, the body is rusted and the engine is buggered, but the trans was still ok, i think, does the t18 have the t50 box? if so i will make an offer for the box if it is a t50 box is it 2t or 3t (looking through the tech section it dosnt go in to specific models of cars have what gearbox) what models of toyotas would have these boxes? and for parts avalibility, are 3t boxes more common that 2t?

hey, arnt those rs5w60a vannette boxes rarer than the normal 5 speed a series boxes?. i have a blown 60 series 5 speed (so i have the bits that needed to convert an a series 5 speed box from one of these vannettes if i can find one), i had been looking everywhere i could and ran in the brick wall of ," all aseies vannettes had 4 speeds, but lseries had 5 speeds" is the 5speed a unicorn of the gearbox world or is there hope. most wreckers around here dont know what i am talking about.
