Oh I know this story all to well; sold my coupe because I had a wazoo fast sports racer that went like mad. 2 motors later I wised up and got the coupe back. The 4000 for the other car is long gone get your ute back and fix it. Trust me as someone who betrayed their Datsun for a faster car ,the sports racer is 25 seconds a lap faster , I'm having way more FUN racing the coupe. Over the 18 years I've owned a 1200 I've had 2 other race cars and 9 street cars the 1200 is my favorite....get yours back.

get some paint, and paint it properly, and you'll have a good ute out of it. at least you know its history.

For my 1200 coupe way back at SCCA drivers school I Ran a stock motor with 3.90 rear end and 185/60 13's. The car would do maybe 6000 RPM and about 88 MPH range.

Currently with GX Cam , H-production head , 37mm / 30mm valves , dual valve springs , header , 2 inch exhaust and 32/36 Weber - the car will pull 8100 RPM although I shift at 7800 and best speed on a really fast track is about 110 MPH downhill. Most tracks I see about 98 MPH.

B210 as previuosly stated there are two A12's the 70-73 A12 with dizzy up front and the A12A 74+ with dizzy in the middle. Nissan refers to them as A12 and A12A in the motorsports catolog. The guys at Nissan Motorsports in Gardena will often ask you this when you order parts.
Get a hold of a Nissan Motorsports catolog there are some things you can do inexpensively to A series motors that will make your car more fun. We put bigger valves in my old B210 street car. I think I put in the bigger vavles and dual springs for $100. Think about what I suggested earlier. Mild cam , bigger vavles , header and Weber carb. I bet this could be done for $375 to $500 range.

Obviously the A12GX bottom end would be best. I currently use a stock A12GX bottom end with the H-production head (flowed) GX springs and A-14 valves with the weber 32/36. The carb has the choke removed and the carb bore smoothed. Keep in mind my car is strictly a racer. I was using a complete GX set up but here in Las Vegas Nevada we have to smog 68 and newer cars. So when I decided to do a Tarmac Rally the car obviously needed to be made street legal. Hence the switch. My lap times have not changed from the near stock GX to the current set-up. I think we are just shy of 90 HP
For a street 1200 we did a buddies car with the standard A12 bottom end , H-production head , A14 valves , B210 Electronic dizzy , header and weber carb. This worked very nicely for a daily driven car with basic shock and sway bar mods. Made a good all arounder.

Tom

PS For SCCA I always had to have the A12 ,the Vintage group doesn't car if the car has an A14 but now after 18 yrs I have a ton of A12 spares.

You can use the GX cam , A14 valves with GX springs a , header and weber 32/36 carb. This will give you 80-85 HP range depending what you do to clean up the head. Standard GX is motor is 83 HP.

Not divisions but segments; I'm a fan of Old Skool with my racer , I like the fact it is streetable and am willing to give up performance for that Old Skool look.
Now with that said if I had huge bucks I would keep my current car plus get a bone stock coupe , a twin cam turbo coupe with monster flares and a sedan for Gravel Rally.
What makes our group unigue is we all have differnat views of the perfect 1200 but also take joy in seeing other visions of the perfect 1200.

I just picked up a tilt trailer so the old one needs to go , I used it to tow my 1200 to the races around the west coast. It is low to the ground and easy to load. Not real pretty but try find any car trailer for $350 , perfect thing to two home those parts cars or take yours to events.

Well this month makes 20 years since I discovered the joys of 1200 driving , since the car was turned into racer back in 1989 there was no need to worry about a title , this was a buddies daily driver and we ran it at Autocross before turning it into a full road race car. Well Sunday he hands me the Title seeing as I prepped the car to do some a Tarmac rally in addition to the vintage racing.
This got me thinking , how many cars I've been through yet the Datsun remains;

Beach MK5 Formula Vee , 85 Nissan pick up , 82 Honda Accord , 80 Honda Civic , Ford Ranger 4wd , 68 F150 , 74 F350 ,65 Ford Galxie , 81 Honda Accord , 90 Mazda Miata , 72 Volvo 144 Rally Car , 71 Volvo142E , 85 Toyota MR2 , D-sports racer , Datsun 510 and Datsun B210
Out of all these cars some of which are Icon's of car culture I still love the 1200 the best - it really is the Model T of my era , light , simple , rugged , inexpensive and easy to repair.
I'm sure lots of you have thrown over some perfectly good cars to keep your Datto.

My old Volvo 142E ran a bearing today love the car but will likely go back to faithful japanese cars. So.... on my short list is a 1200 but I'm in vegas and AC is a must , so if you know of any 1200's with AC let me know.
