well being Catholic and all....... These are the crimes I've comittied against my 1200. 1984 I owned the car for a day and sold it to my best mate 1989 I got the car back and started racing it. 1997 I sold the car because I had this dollar sucking Single seater 2001 I got the car back.
Also along the way I have thrown out good interior parts and a pristine set of hubcaps and over two moves the 12" jelly belly bean mags came up missing. Ok so what evil things have you done.
Ok as a long time road racer of first bikes then cars and a Rally organizer , it is easy to think Rally is about a pair of gazongas. If you start using every inch of the road well there are 500 corners at a Rally and conditions change with each passing car so.... your going to go off if you drive 100% of the car everywhere. That is why the Navie is there to slow down the silly arsed driver , we all believe we can save it. West Coast Rallys in the USA are rough so we have 20-40% of the cars falling out. My favourite line is from a muti time SCCA champ. "roads don't break cars , drivers do" Anyway Congrats Harry , Rally is an absolute blast way more challenging then our road race stuff.
Well here is an easy test - bypass the PCV valve , park on the same incline and see if you get the smoke on start up. Oh and don't be surprised if your car pings this summer. There are lots of things you can do in the name of performance but when it comes to street cars the quickest way to take the fun out of them is by making performance the only consideration. You live in a state where the car Nazi's are well known for road side inspections. It won't be much fun if you get hassled over something as chicken S#*t as the PCV valve. I would do some testing before you start tearing the stuff off.
Tom Grossmann , Las Vegas
PS: I've run the PCV valve on the HP vintage road racer / tarmac Rally car for years.
At SCCA drivers school back in 1990 the engine was bone stock except header. Running on 185/60 13's the car did 88 MPH - boy did I get passed. With standard brakes I thought it was plenty fast enough.
Welcome aboard Andy , we've had our 1200 since 1980 or so. it was a daily driver but got turned into a Road Race and Tarmac rally car. Of all Datsun's I love 1200's the best only 1500lbs and lots of suspension and motor upgrades are availible. 1200 parts are readily avaiIible you just have to hunt a little. If you are ever coming to Las Vegas give me a shout.
I race with an A12 because I have lots of parts and because up until switching to Vintage I had to have an A12 per the rules. Now that I can choose I will put in an A14 eventually, in the mean time I will use the GX bottom end with the H-prod Head with Weber DGV carb. So your plan of runnig the A12 into the ground and building your A14 is a good one , althought it may take 5 or 10 years to kill the A12!!! I have been racing with the same bottom end since 1991.
