I don't want to seem too much of a sceptic on the rotary valve stuff, and nor am I looking to offend, but here's an article about the history of the rotary valvetrain...

http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM ... ValveIC/RotaryValveIC.htm

If it offered all the advantages that coates claim, wouldn't all manufacturers use them? (considering that they've been around sinced the 1930's and with current laws 15:1 compression would be very handy for economy etc).

Spending 8k of your own hard earned would be a brave experiment, but good luck to you if you give it a go.

very sorry to see that... I hope all goes well. Having been not at fault in an accident in my old BMW, I'd say her insurance company is going to be a total pain. At least you have comprehensive so your insurance company will go in to bat for you to cover their costs.

I had 3rd party fire and theft only, so as I was not at fault my insurance wouldn't do anything - their insurance wrote my car off, and only gave me $1650 when the book value for my car was $4000, and they would not take into consideration that the car had a fully rebuilt engine + many hard to get/ desirable extras on it. I got my wreck back, and repaired it on the cheap, but the car was never the same.

Sounds like Shannons is far more understanding than most, and once I finish restoring my 1200 I think I'll go with them. Good luck!!

mine's a 1973 coupe... has 54000 miles on the odometer, I presume it has been around once. I have replaced most of the running gear since I have had it, just the diff to go (it's getting pretty noisy).

Previously my family had a 120Y sedan that did 300000km on the original running gear. Over all those miles, the only thing replaced was the valve stem seals at one point to solve a slight oil burning problem. It was still running fine when the 300000 clicked over, but my parents felt sorry for it and pensioned it off.

Well guys... sounds like you had better start petitioning to get AIR back open - was one of the best 1/4 mile strips in Australia at one point.

Either that, or join a car club and go do some track days out at Mallala. See if you can crack the Allen's SR20 1200 coupe track record out there

As you're in Australia... go with the late 120Y PBR brake setup if you can. I used the struts and brakes from the 120Y, with the springs and strut-tops from the 1200. All bolts straight in, and will give you a good upgrade from the drums. The PBR calipers are larger than the japanese 120y ones.

I also use a 120Y brake booster and Stanza 13/16 PBR master cylinder. I found the Stanza booster easier to get hold of (Sigmas run the same one also). The 120Y booster takes some firewall mods to fit (bigger centre hole, and 4 bolts instead of 2 to bolt up).

Plenty of info on this on the wiki.

Good Luck.

yeah - and it's even easier here in SA if you hang on to the registration renewal. You can have the car off the road as long as you want, grab the renewal number off the form and re-register online with just a $15 fee to adjust the date! No need to even go in to the RTA at all!

I run early 90's Mazda Astina seats in mine - the dimensions are virtually identical to the 1200 seats, so they're an excellent fit. The 1200 frame rails bolt on to the front of the seat, and at the rear, you just need a couple of short pieces of steel to lengthen the rails slightly.

I think the seats are the best upgrade you can do for the comfort of your 1200.

This is getting off subject but scrappys dont pay 200 dollars for a ton of scrap its around the 80-100 dollar mark, unless its worth double wherever your from. full stop.

Well it's called a commodity boom for a reason - and certainly we're getting $180 - $200 a ton for scrap steel down here in Adelaide. You obviously haven't sold any scrap for a while

Let's just hope that too many people don't send their old Datsuns to the scrap metal merchants without realising that people might actually want them!

Oh - and I used to have a manual R31 silhouette which had a 3.7 LSD, so they certainly exist - it was also listed in the glovebox handbook for the silhouette.

didn't datsun already have an L8 ... wasn't it 3.4L?

I've always thought 2 A series in a 90 degree v formation would have been great... A series V8s between 2L and 3L

A 2.4L version based on the A12A block would have revved real well!

That 2 cylinder is nuts. Would love to see a video of it running also

Yeah - maybe. You might want to read about the bubble in classic car prices that happened in the UK at the end of the 80's / early 90's. Interesting stuff indeed!

Didn't really happen in OZ during the 80's like in the UK, but is happening now - according to the article, UK collectors have learned from their mistakes in the late 80's. The question is have we learned?

Surely GTHO Falcons selling for $600 - 700k is not realistic. (thankfully 1200s have not gone up anything like that )
