hmmm... well I think $1600 and shipped at the buyer's expense sounds very reasonable actually for second hand gear, but maybe I'm totally wrong.

I'm quite amazed at some of the prices people are trying to get (or are they getting them?) for 1200 parts lately.

To put the Dogleg into some perspective... I have owned old BMWs for many years. I can get a
BMW motorsport dogleg 5 speed box for my 70's 323i (Getrag 245 sport - was fitted to maybe 300
cars total in the Australian market over the whole life cycle the e21 3 series) for around $1000.
Taking into account attrition rates etc, they are a very rare / hard to find and sought after box.
Yes, you can import them from Europe, but this is very expensive, so it hasn't been all that common.

Considering the number of A series gearboxes that must have been imported to Australia via the grey market during the 70s, 80s and 90s, $1600 for a 5 speed, dogleg or not is surely excessive.

Sure, I love my 1200 but some of the parts prices some people are chasing these days border on crazy.

END RANT

yeah- that is a pretty cool little endo at the end of that clip!

on the subject of Kei cars, we get a few down here in OZ as grey imports... cappucinos, beats + a few of the small hatch ones.

Anyone tried putting a cappucino engine in a 1200??? Sure - they wouldn't be much more HP than stock, but with only 3 cylinders + 660cc you'd have a pretty economical daily driver + they're RWD, so is shouldn't be so hard to get it in there!

yeah- sounds a good deal! I think 300Cs are 5 stud hubs though, so if you want matching rims all round, you'd need to switch to 5 stud hubs on the front as well.

When was the last time you saw a manufacturer spend thousands on something that's not worth bothering about? Except for maybe Kia...

lol... I wouldn't believe everything you read in magazines... my wife has an 06 Kia Rio. Since Hyundai took over they're pretty darn good! We test drove that vs a Corolla and a Tiida and picked the rebadged Hyundai. The Corolla in particular was ####e and the Renault looks of the Tiida put us off in the end... we saved a good $5k over the others in the process and haven't had any problems with the Rio.

Sure, it's not fun like the 1200 (BUT WHAT IS!! )

Aussie Mags always loved bagging 120y's, and I'd own one over a 70's Corolla any day of the week.

I've just had the brakes fixed and next week she's going in for a tune - seems to be running rough on choke and at startup, but is magic when warmed up, so probably just some adjustment in the carby and timing.

Welcome to the board! Your car looks great.

I think most A series run pretty rough on the choke / startup with the standard carb! I've had mine for 9 years, and it's always been the same despite carby rebuilds, new jets etc. Runs like a dream once it warms up, and doesn't stall when it's cold, so I stopped worrying about it long ago

I've been thinking about rebuilding a later electric choke carb and giving that a go (I've had several bluebirds that have always run fine with their hitachi carbs and electric choke).

LOL... re: 2... I have those exact same Cheviot alloys on my 1200 coupe, and I couldn't fit them without spacers either. They were supposedly Stanza rims that I bought, but they seem a pretty weird offset for sure!

No... I won't take an extra set off your hands

those hubcaps look like the ones off of the 60's & early 70s Toyota Coronas! The early hiace vans also had them I think....

I had an old 1966 Corona shovel nose as my first car... with 4 wheel drums and ancient suspension they were lethal! Not a pinch on a Datsun 1600. I also went through 4 engines in that thing (so much for Toyota reliability!).

How about original 180B hubcaps for the ratwagon! They'd look great on the 13s, although they'd cover all the red on the wheels.

yeah that or the oil pressure switch could be stuffed also could be that the oil is 2 thick maby?

I've had a few cars with very high mileage do this with a dying oil pump, and have found that thick oil can actually help the problem... It will take a little longer to bring pressure up when you start the car, or you can give it a small blip on the throttle to get the pressure up, but the thicker oil hangs up in the engine better so the light doesn't come back on at idle once the pressure is up the first time. I generally use 40W70 for this kind of purpose (yes it's pretty hot here in Adelaide, so you probably don't want to try this in the winter in the US, or if you live in Thredbo or something!)

If it's an engine that you want to keep long term though, just get it checked out and fixed!

yes - that would seem correct (if wikipedia can be believed!) ... J engines with leaf springs in the back for the 510 making a 'datsun 1500'! Here's a discussion on them from another forum with some pics.
