It's just my opinion, but the 5 speed with reverse in the upper left hand corner is awful, making the 1-2 power shift (perhaps the most fun of all) worthless. I used a 5 speed from an '81
210 sedan that has the correct shift pattern (reverse down and to the right, with the classic 1-4 'H' pattern). It has the identical spline shaft as the one from a 1200 4 speed, and is a
small and light weight tranny, again, very simliar to the stock 1200 4 speed. I had a perfect one of these in White Zombie, but the combination of an instantaneous 500 ft. lbs. of
electric motor torque and sticky Mickey Thompson baby wrinkle wall slicks was too much... ripped the input shaft right off after a few runs with progressively lower rear tire pressures!

It's been many years since I had the twin Weber 45mm carbs on my A1200 motor, but I do remember this much.... The first thing I had to do, was get a GX head from an import (from Japan) Sunny
GX engine). This head has the bigger valves and huge (for a 1200 cc motor) oval intake ports. This head is key to everythiong else, and without it, you really can't do the twin side draft carb
thing and get really big results. I next bought a Nissan Comp. dual side draft intake manifold. I also got a beefy, high lift, big overlap cam from Nissan Comp., a racing version distributor
from Nissan Comp., a set of Nissan Comp. headers, and cc'd the head and installed J series flat top pistons, resulting in an 11.5:1 compression. Of course, a free flow exhaust system was also
installed. It's been too many years (nearly 20), so I can't even talk about prices or availabilty.
The engine was pretty potent once it got to 5 grand and it pulled crazy right past the 97000 rpm redline I had it set at. As a sidebar, I still have the rare factory 10 grand tach in the dash
of White Zombie.

Thanks for the history. The 1200 is a very fun car, and its light weight feel and nimbleness makes it all the more to drive....kinda like a street legal gokart. My 2000 Honda Insight gas/
electric hybrid car feels like a '2000 Datsun 1200' might feel, and when I first test drove the Insight, I immediately thought of the 1200 in the way it felt to drive. Other than its front
wheel drive (arrgghh), the Insight at just 1878 lbs. is light enough and small enough to bring back that fun 1200 feeling. Yes, this car looks way different than the square shouldered 1200
sedan, and with its teardrop shape, rear wheels that are 4 inches closer together than the front wheels are, swoopy sports car like lines and fender skirts in back, the Insight doesn't look
anything like a 1200, but it drives and feels VERY 1200 like.
Thanks again for sharing the story of your 1200 love affair. If Nissan were to get its head pulled out of its ass, and reintroduce the great Datsun name to the US and reissue the 1200
sedan, I'd buy one in a heartbeat!

Yeah, wasn't it nice of Nissan to have made two different ones to please all of us (bummer that the US never saw the wagon or that awesome truck version!)?
I am in the other camp, in that I much prefer the sedans over the fastback. I like the more upright windshield (less claustrophobic), the extra 2 inches of headroom, and the structurally
stronger body that has a steel bulkhead behind the seat that separates the trunk and ties the rear of the passenger space together...missing this piece, the fastback is a bit boomy and shoe
box like as it rolls down the road....the sedan has a much more solid feel. In the states at least, the plastic formed grill of the fastback, to me, lacks the quality look of the sedan
