Hi all.
Today I engaged reverse gear and because I was in a hurry I forgot to select second gear first.
By selecting second gear first it never crunched when selecting reverse.
When I tried to select reverse I crunched or scratched my reverse.I immediately released the gearlever from my hand so that it does'nt engage and did the second gear selection and then reverse thing.
It then went in successfully.
I am very cross with myself in doing this.
My question:
I felt in my hand on the gearlever when this happened the gears scratching against each other.
Can this damage my reverse gear bad or not so much.
I did release the lever immediately when this happened and did'nt force it into reverse when it happended.
I do not want to damage my gearbox.

Chances are nothing is broken. If it shifts in cleanly, and doesn't make any extra whirring noises, then the gears are still ok.

If it made a lot of noise, then change the gearbox oil and look for bits of gear teeth.

Mate you are the born worrier!! Don't be concerned about having done any damage by graunching your gearbox. You would have to do this repeatedly or for a sustained period of time to cause any trouble. It's much harder on the boxes with big rev changes, big hp engines, clutchless changes, burnouts etc. Everything will be fine - don't worry be happy!!!

I was going to tell him "don't worry be happy" also.

Yes yes, I know I worry alot.
But my clutch was replaced 3 times in 2 years.Not my fault but mechanics who did'nt do a proper job the previous times.
I do not want to remove my gearbox AGAIN because I was stupid with my gears.
Can you blame me for worrying?
I enjoy my Datsun and want to enjoy it for many more years as it is.
